Empower beats out Elemental Damage with Attacks only in a +3 staff/maul, unless you have an Empower 4 (in which case it is always superior). This is because the +1 to socketed gems applies to Empower, giving a further +1 to SRS. The difference isn't enormous so it's a very low priority investment.

empower is more important on minion builds that expect the minions to stay alive and get hit often. such as zombie builds and golem builds. srs are flying temporary minions they care not for either part of that situation
Just bricked shaper. Deathless until p3, everything easy, but in p3 he just murders all your spirirts with his twin and it takes so long that the whole area is eventually filled with voids It's really sad that you start every phase with like 2 mil dps only for it to drop down to maybe 200k because you can't keep attacking...
Will try again when I have empower lvl 4, but looks like I maybe should consider rerolling, since endgame damage just doesn't look so great, even empower 4 is just 10% increase. Current gear:
With 7,9k life and 830 str, still no chance p3. Don't even know if there are any other dmg upgrades besides EMpower 4, don't think so ...

Yeah Im wondering about this too. shaper seems out of the question, although I'm not quite at him yet. How are the guardians with SRS?

Any advice about the skill tree for someone how can't afford Baron?
I want to maximize the tree regarding that i would not buy the baron for a while, maybe don't buy it at all...

You need corpses to detonate for Flesh Offering. Desecrate provides you with corpses for that purpose. The ascendency node Spirit Eater also requires that you have corpses for the extra damage. However, its not really necessary but a QOL thing, you can do without it.
Vulnerability is better for clear speed, but most prefer enfeeble for the extra defensive layer.
