Race Event Season One announced!

to solve the issue of time, would it not be possible to make it so when you enter a character in an event that character is only active for the specified time period.

For example. you have a 1hr solo event for a specific day. (or even a 24hr period). You create a character and enter the event. that character has a 1hr time limit from the time then enter the server. After which it is automatically logged out and can not log back in.

this way everyone will be able to play in the race regardless of their time zone/work schedule.

the same could work for all the other races with longer time limits and/or partying. you just have to make sure everyone in your party logs in at the same time.

I think people need to realize that good games don't cater to casuals OR hardcore, they cater to both and hopefully everything in between. They have systems that make the hardcore players happy, and systems to keep the casuals coming back.

Right now, this might be a game designed for hardcore players, but it's not going to bring many new players in or have a high retention rate.

f2p is a model that thrives on masses of casual players.

So designing a game aimed only at hardcore players without systems in place to bring noobs in or keep the casuals interested and then making it f2p just makes no sense. But good luck dealing with your design paradoxes.

All the complaining seems to come from people with no long-term thinking.

This is Season ONE.

Things can change and probably will change for Season TWO.

Have a Suggestion for changes for Season TWO? Why not post it in the Suggestions Forum?

It looks as though 8 Seasons are possible in a years time. We could get 7 Seasons in 2013. A lot will depend on how much "off-time" there is between Seasons.

I would humbly suggest that everyone calms down and either enjoy the races or ignore.
I might race just for the fun of the race, but the rewards suck. The art team does a nice job, don't want to take that away from them, but the rewards are so completely uninteresting. ilvl 100 means nothing either, unless you can roll unknown ilvl 100 mods right now and have otherwise impossible gear, but that only applies to the ring anyway really. And the demigods are going to go to the same handful of people, so who cares about that reward?

And why go with an obviously shitty system in season 1? For the hell of it?
No thanks.

I'm in an abusive relationship with life. It keeps beating the hell out of me and I'm too cowardly to leave it.

Personally, as a mostly casual player, I really like the structure and the prizes. The timing is perfect for me (Europe), and I'm sure they will fix up the timing for other timezones soon enough.

This would get rid of something that I really like- that milestones reached by various players are broadcast immediately inside the league. "xyz is the first person to kill Hillock" or whatever. It intensifies that feeling of competition and makes it feel more real. Kind of like how loot isn't instanced. It gives that feeling that you're really playing with other people.

It's not an obviously shitty system, you just have an obviously shitty brain.

It is, stop being sheep.
Also, to all the people who think it's OK for races to have no incentives whatsoever unless you're a no-life top-20 player, would you say the same thing about a poker tournament? Would you play a poker tournament with fake chips? No. Why not? Because it's not fun. Why? Because there's nothing at stake.

What happens when you play a fake-chip poker tournament anyway? People don't play the same way. Why not? Behavior changes when there is nothing at stake. What kind of behavior changes? People care less about their own survival and bet recklessly.

What kind of behavior changes will we see in an effectively reward-less PoE race structure? We'll see everybody outside of the top 20-40 players playing recklessly since they will never get a reward anyway. Then we'll see them never play another race again because playing recklessly is equivalent to a lack of engagement in the activity.

If the races have no rewards except for the top 2% of players, then only the top 2% of players will continue to play them.
