Skill Reveal - Lacerate

dear GGG - melee's problem (as in being complete and utter joke compared to ranged in competitive environment) wont be solved by an AOE totem and Cleave rehash

melee is playable but noone will even play it for money/prizes - as it is a subpar choice that cannot do some content (Vinktar square map as melee.. good luck with 'normal' gear. snoozefest with any bow build)

only way to balance it at least somehow is to nerf ranged by a lot and we all know you wont do it because you are afraid of the backslash and crying customers. so just like in the old days of 1000HP Kaom's - you are hold hostage by previous decisions you are not capable of backing out of

so sure, pump out gimmick after gimmick but do not expect to anyone seriously use them when playing ranged is just - undeniably - better. just check the current race results..

I hear you, but competitive play is between roles and classes, not a free for all, so people can and will play melee roles for prizes, if only to compete against a smaller pool of people or to just change up their competitive environment.

I'm not the most experienced PoE player ever, but from reading around this is the kind of thing I see a lot. Is GGG's stats on the split of ascendancy (everything within 1% of each other for the most part) not speak to this a bit?

I guess my point is, it's OK for it to not be exactly as good and merely "playable" due to the nature of competitions being between ascendancy (are they keeping this for all future leagues?) Of course, it's also OK if melee gets a buff too, but I don't think bringing down ranged is needed due to the above reasoning.

Sid's comment on competitive play was just an aside. And he -never- said anything about ascendancies specifically. The race results he's talking about are based on what skill the person used, not the ascendancy itself. Keep in mind even some subclasses like Juggernaut or Champion are flexible enough that they can do spells quite easily.

The main point is that despite melee being playable, a vast majority of ranged builds slaughter anything that requires being up close and personal. They feel better, they play better, they're just simply better. Hell, compare a melee Berserker to a spell-based Berserker. The former needs to worry a lot about defense because it's going to be hit much more. Its offense is alright if using a good melee skill, but the defensive problems are a real burden. The latter has both better defense by staying away from things and having universal life leech and also better offense because spells are much easier to scale and use than melee skills.
Probably been said before but this would have been better served as a support skill gem that applied to single target skills. A variation of the typical arpg single target active skill theme of cadence, every 3rd hit or w/e being AoE.

Ele lacerate inquisitor? ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
The idea is nice, but the character looks more like spreading signal if you ask me.

About as noteworthy as ele reave inquisitor, which is not much. If an Inquisitor is going melee then he'll be using one of the elemental conversion skills plus other items or just AoF for 100% conversion.

Was anyone else hoping for a spell that caused bleeding?

Having read every post, yeah, lots of people. First thing I thought when I saw "lacerate" is "cool, a bleed skill!" Was disappointed twice... no mention of bleeding and no claw support. The lack of variety in claw builds is really pathetic considering how often the fucking things drop. This skill should definitely be available on claws IMO.
POE Serenity Prayer: GGG, grant me the serenity to accept the RNG I cannot change,
the courage to challenge any unbalanced content, and the wisdom to avoid the forums.

If they add claw support then they'd also need to add dagger support. But that seems entirely reasonable to me since daggers are quite capable of lacerating too. The only melee weapons it shouldn't work with are maces and staves for pretty obvious reasons if we're adhering to the skill's name fluff.
unfortuantely the name of the skill apparently is not very descriptive of what it actually does

Yeah, this makes some sense, although claws and daggers are obviously too small to cleave, they lacerate pretty much well, especially claws. It is also kinda questionable if axes can, I mean, they are made for more serious kinds of attacks that will cripple for sure if they hit, not just make wounds or stabs.
