Ugh, having such a streak of bad luck
The highlight of my mapping over the past couple of days was when a tier 5 map dropped two tier 5 maps. Mostly all map drops are below the tier of the map they dropped in. Run a tier 8 map? Highest drop is tier 7. Tier 6 map? A single tier 4 map drops. I can't keep up a tier 6 pool, and even tier 5 looks doubtful. So annoying. At this rate I'll end up having to buy maps from Zana to get anything reasonable to run.

Took me over 20 Tier 1&2 maps to finally get Zana to spawn. When she finally did, she gave me a "kill the rogue exiles" without a timer. Cool. Killed both exiles and instead of TPing back to Zana, I figured I'd just go back to the original one. On the way back, the server crashed.

I'm having a hard time remembering when Vorici gave other missions than "kill the target, leave the paper thin, throw themselves onto every spiky object in range guards alone".
I don't think I'll be getting the Fusing discount this league. |

" That's seems odd to me. I have never run out of 7's and 8's. My 5s and 6s are a full tab each. I have not had to run one in a very long time. I tend to alternate between: run all my 7s run all the 8s I accumulated run all the 9+ (not much) go back to running all my 7s Yesterday was a run all 7s day and I started with 23 of them. Today I have been running all my 8's and I started with 14 of them. While running the 1st 6 of the 8s I found 2x 8, 3x 7, 2x 9, 1x 10 and I have no idea how many lower level maps. By the time I run out of 8s I should have around 20x 7, and several 8-10 to run. That pattern has been consistent since I started running this tier of map. | |
You know how it is when you try to show something to someone? The thing promptly stops happening. In the name of science I recorded all map drops and other notable drops from a few maps.
Spoiler
Each map started off as white. Whatever quality they have was there when they dropped. The listed IIQ is the map's IIQ and does not include the 6% I get from my map device. I decided the maps to run in advance to avoid confirmation bias, although in hindsight I realized the T6 and T7 maps would potentially throw off the average.
T5 Underground Sea, 34% IIQ, 17% IIR no maps 1 vaal, 1 fusing rare ring (chaos recipe) sustainability ratio 0 T5 Pier, 37% IIQ, 13% IIR, 11% quality, twinned no maps 1 chisel, 0.9 alch from selling rares sustainability ratio 0 T5 Villa, 47% IIQ, 19% IIR, 9% quality maps: channel (T2), dry woods (T6) 1 regret, 1 scouring (Unfortunately I can't use the wand on this character because the added fire damage would mess up my elemental equilibrium) sustainability ratio 3.04 T6 Dry Woods, 67% IIQ, 34% IIR maps: overgrown shrine (T4), colonnade (T6), shore (T4), thicket (T3) 1 chisel 2 rare rings (regal recipe) sustainability ratio 1.26 T7 Waste Pool, 60% IIQ, 30% IIR, 25% more rare monsters (chaosed once because of temporal chains) no maps 1 fusing, 21 jeweler (from 6S drops), 1 chisel, 3 chance sustainability ratio 0 overall sustainability ratio 0.45 The T6 drop from a T5 map was nice, but still the overall sustainability ratio is way below one. Didn't I imply bad luck not happening when I tried to record it? Well, the icing on the otherwise rather bland cake was this:
Spoiler
T8 Jungle Walley (Zana map in the Waste Pool), 55% IIQ, 20% IIR, twinned (not that it matters because I can't kill even one boss on this map) maps: terrace (T7), arid lake (T9), abandoned cavern (T7), overgrown shrine (T4) 1 fusing sustainability ratio 3.68 (11.04 based on the T7 map where Zana was) corrected overall sustainability ratio 7.08 I even managed to not die (I've had a number of stupid deaths recently and probably lost a level's worth of XP) and leveled to 85 close to the end of the run. That allowed me to try the difficult boss I otherwise would have just skipped. Predictably I died twice and decided to give up. Last edited by databeaver#1892 on Apr 18, 2016, 6:21:49 AM

Variance in mapping is high, that is why the experience for different players is so different. I can sustain T8s now it seems. It is luck-based a lot.
Do you just alch-and-go all your maps? That should usually do the job. Remove Horticrafting station storage limit.

Mapping adventures continue!
Spoiler
T5 Villa, 27% IIQ, 14% IIR
maps: underground sea (T5), villa (T5), cemetery (T2) 2 alch, 14 jeweler sustainability ratio: 2.04 T5 Villa, 24% IIQ, 12% IIR, twinned no maps 1 fusing sustainability ratio: 0 That was a really bad run, lol T5 Villa, 32% IIQ, 16% IIR maps: tunnel (T4), arcade (T2) 1 chaos, 1 chisel sustainability ratio: 0.37 T5 Underground Sea, 26% IIQ, 13% IIR, 20% more rare monsters maps: dunes (T1) 1 regret sustainability ratio: 0.01 T5 Pier, 33% IIQ, 17% IIR no maps 2 chance, 7 jeweler sustainability ratio: 0 T6 Colonnade, 35% IIQ, 23% IIR, 15% pack size (forgot to alch) maps: catacomb (T6), abandoned cavern (T7), graveyard (magic, T5), bog (T5) sustainability ratio: 4.67 T6 Catacomb, 61% IIQ, 33% IIR, 15% pack size, 5% quality maps: villa (T5), promenade (T4), channel (magic, T2), wharf (T2) 1 chisel, 14 jeweler sustainability ratio: 0.47 T6 Dry Woods, 26% IIQ, 13% IIR (forgot to alch again...) maps: waste pool (T7) 1 chaos, gemcutter card sustainability ratio: 3 T6 Colonnade, 71% IIQ, 41% IIR, 15% pack size, twinned (traded up from 3x T5 because I hate the boss in Coves, chaosed once because of beyond and original low IIQ) maps: arachnid nest (T6), torture chamber (T7) 1 chaos, 1 alch, 1 chisel 1 rare ring (regal recipe), 1 rare ring (chaos recipe) Lowball uniques, but that robe makes me want to try a blood magic character sustainability ratio: 4 Total maps used: 5x T5, 4x T6 Total maps dropped: 1x T1, 4x T2, 2x T4, 5x T5, 2x T6, 3x T7 Total sustainability ratio: 2.28 " Very random indeed. More than half the maps I run have a sustainability ratio below one, but occasionally there's a total windfall to offset it. Funny how T5 maps seem to be particularly bad. Can't be magic vs. rare, because the two T6 maps I accidentally ran as blue gave good map drops. " T6 and above mostly. I may chaos if the alch result is total nope (see my notes about the maps). T5 and below I run blue. |

Sounds like the right strategy.
When doing extensive modeling of map drops, it turned out that even if you hover at a certain "sustainability point", for example only run T9+ and never run out, on average (tested over 1 million maps), only around 40% of the maps will have a sustainability index > 1. Anyways, you might hit T10 tomorrow and just park there for a week (given that your build can handle it). It is frustrating, but it happens. Remove Horticrafting station storage limit.

" Not all that surprising TBH, given that a T+1 drop has a value of 3 and a T+2 drop is valued at 9 (assuming the methodology is the same as mine). Those will increase the average more than low or no drops decrease it. " I have nine T7 maps now, although more than half of those are types where I either know I can't kill the boss (Jungle Valley) or am hesitant to try because the boss sounds hard (Terrace, Torture Chamber). Funny thing, that - out of the five types of T7 maps, only two are even remotely easy, and even those can kill you if you're careless. I'm pretty sure my build can handle T10 maps. I've done one T9 and managed to clear it, even with beyond (it was my first beyond map; since then I've come to realize how dangerous the beyond bosses can be). Since then I've acquired a level or two and some minor equipment upgrades. |

Terrace boss is pretty easy now if you have somewhat decent DPS, Torture Chamber is all about mechanics (and one of the most well-designed bosses in the game). Worth trying :).
