Ugh, having such a streak of bad luck

You know how it is when you try to show something to someone? The thing promptly stops happening. In the name of science I recorded all map drops and other notable drops from a few maps.

Spoiler
Each map started off as white. Whatever quality they have was there when they dropped. The listed IIQ is the map's IIQ and does not include the 6% I get from my map device. I decided the maps to run in advance to avoid confirmation bias, although in hindsight I realized the T6 and T7 maps would potentially throw off the average.

T5 Underground Sea, 34% IIQ, 17% IIR
no maps
1 vaal, 1 fusing
rare ring (chaos recipe)
sustainability ratio 0

T5 Pier, 37% IIQ, 13% IIR, 11% quality, twinned
no maps
1 chisel, 0.9 alch from selling rares
sustainability ratio 0

T5 Villa, 47% IIQ, 19% IIR, 9% quality
maps: channel (T2), dry woods (T6)
1 regret, 1 scouring

(Unfortunately I can't use the wand on this character because the added fire damage would mess up my elemental equilibrium)
sustainability ratio 3.04

T6 Dry Woods, 67% IIQ, 34% IIR
maps: overgrown shrine (T4), colonnade (T6), shore (T4), thicket (T3)
1 chisel
2 rare rings (regal recipe)
sustainability ratio 1.26

T7 Waste Pool, 60% IIQ, 30% IIR, 25% more rare monsters (chaosed once because of temporal chains)
no maps
1 fusing, 21 jeweler (from 6S drops), 1 chisel, 3 chance
sustainability ratio 0

overall sustainability ratio 0.45

The T6 drop from a T5 map was nice, but still the overall sustainability ratio is way below one. Didn't I imply bad luck not happening when I tried to record it? Well, the icing on the otherwise rather bland cake was this:

Spoiler

T8 Jungle Walley (Zana map in the Waste Pool), 55% IIQ, 20% IIR, twinned (not that it matters because I can't kill even one boss on this map)
maps: terrace (T7), arid lake (T9), abandoned cavern (T7), overgrown shrine (T4)
1 fusing
sustainability ratio 3.68 (11.04 based on the T7 map where Zana was)

corrected overall sustainability ratio 7.08

I even managed to not die (I've had a number of stupid deaths recently and probably lost a level's worth of XP) and leveled to 85 close to the end of the run. That allowed me to try the difficult boss I otherwise would have just skipped. Predictably I died twice and decided to give up.

none of your maps has the only stat which matters: pack size

Yeah, but since Zana does gives you a mission (free map) every day, and since you can buy maps off her, even with horrible luck you should still be able to run something half descent.

Yeah, well, she sells up to T9 - if you get her to level 7, which I don't have yet. That is more like semi-half decent. She sells T11 at level 8, but getting her to level 8 in a temp league... I won't even try.

Zana lvl 7 here. Do these maps look like T9 to you ? :)

(ok it only happened today but i think it is funny that you mentioned she has T9 for sale.)
Can't see the image, so no idea. According to the wiki she can sell T9 at level 7, and T11 at level 8. Why they made the jump from level 7 to level 8 extra big, such that she is pretty much useless at level 1-7 and only at all (but then quite) useful at level 8 is beyond me to be honest.

She only had T1-T5 today. :)
All the masters have problems and the rest are even worse ( for example all their specific items like Tora`s Bows or Catarina`s Wands are capped at iLvl 59 even when they are lvl 8 ).
And they all have a chance to offer you a strong item at lvl 8 ( for example a good unique ) so that is a big step from level 7 when they don`t offer you anything useful.
The problem is that before you upgrade them to level 8, there is a good chance that you are well into your 90s with your character and for Zana is even worse because she requires 1.45 kk rep from lvl 7 to level 8.
I don`t consider Zana to be useless because i like to run T8-T10 maps as they are easier to craft and easier to maintain than the bigger tiers. Not to mention that they are easier to clear. :D
T8 Canyon - 90ish IIQ, 40ish IIR 14packsize.

Spent a minute killing mobs, noticed that Zana was there and then ... "This operation requires the account to be logged in"

I had no idea i was playing while not being logged in. So i did that...and of course my portals were all gone.
I still consider myself lucky, i mean this time it wasn`t a T10-T12 map that went down the toilet. :)

Its all about rolling your maps. I chisel & alch all of them. Also i am using chaos if the quantity is too low. I am always trying to gain 100%+ quantity and packsize. That way i am able to sell my t10 maps for chisels while still having some left in case i cant sustain my t11 maps.
I am also rolling all strongboxes. Its pretty much worth it if your map has high quantity.
I've never bought any zana maps. They are kinda expensive.

Disclaimer: I haven't looked at exchange rates for a looong time. I don't really need to / want to buy things much anymore.

Buuuut.... You think spending 5 alchs on a t11 is too much but you will chisel and alch and chaos a t10? Or is that only 11s - or as we knew them back in the day, level 77 maps? Cause if it's the former I suspect you're spending more than you save in just buying and running a white (or trans/aug) t11. Certainly rolling boxes for 1 measly pack of magic monsters (I presume?) - I haven't heard of that being done much since they nerfed the everliving crap out of that mod.

Anyhow I play 97% self found nowadays and 5 alchs for a tier 11 is fine. For that matter, with the zana map cost changes I can mostly live with the map system overall, though I still think there are elegant solutions to the whole 'orbs are currency therefore we need a sink therefore we need an endgame where content requires expenditure therefore maps' system.
Pack size is all you should aim for.

Even on blue low tier maps. Either that or speed run low maps.

Ripping 2K fuse and not have a 6L is pretty common and not surprising ....

But sheeps always want more.
