I am a returning player and started this build in the new leagues.
2. Why Herald of thunder? It can't ever make a body explode as we do no shock damage, so is it only because of the added lightning damage? And is it really worth it for that little?
Thanks.
Herald of Ash is for physical and Herald of Ice does less damage than Herald of Thunder.
I would also like to have it elaborated on why Herald of Thunder is a good idea. First, Herald of Ice seems to do more damage (53-70 vs. 19-76 on level 20). Second, Herald of Ice provides more utility, since it can actually freeze (right?) and proc.
Also, it seems to me like the damage of either Herald is too puny to justify the life reservation (at least on Hardcore).
Shock... as it's often easier it seems to find things with plus Lightning damage, also since it's pure int, it's easier to meet the requirements early on. Mine doesn't proc that often... but it does... so things are getting shocked .. doesn't hurt I have two sources of lightning damage in addition to totem. But mainly... it's to spread curses with it when it does proc (see OP for the 4 link with it). I can see HoI being useful too.. I've often thought that Ice would be more useful for the slow/freeze, but don't know if it works better for curse spreading that HoT..
With the 50% reduction once you take the life nodes behind Blood Magic.. it's not bad. At 41 HoT gives me another 200 DPS... granted I don't have BM yet, so once you hit that level.. you could drop it... it is optional.

The problem I have with a herald is that it is a % (of life). So the more life you get, the more it takes. Early on it is very helpful, because the way the build works (even if you go crit) is that the damage scales a lot more at very late levels when you get your final gear, sockets, crit, etc. Until then, that extra damage from a herald is really important. (Especially in softcore, since dying doesn't even matter until lategame) I stopped using the Herald when I started maps. I don't need the damage, and I'd rather not lose xp, so the life is much more valuable.

In my opinion, a much stronger build if you have a nice crit dagger to back up your consuming dark.
You also have the option of going dual curse since you are so close to it, I chose not to because I roll alot of curse immune maps.
Btw, what jewels you have in these 4 slots, come crit based?
My tooltip increased by about 16k dual wield and 10k with shield.
Gem Changes:
Flammability -> Assassin's Mark / Enfeeble
Fire Pen -> Increased Critical Damage
With Shield:
6.2k Armour
6.3k Life
That 6L + crit shit gives insane dmg i see, nice.
With Dual Wield:
2.4k Armour
5.9k Life

That 6L + crit stuff sure gives a hell lot of dmg, nice.

Dropping both fire pen and flammability at the same time is not very wise unless you are just doing it for a pretty tooltip screenshot.
Having zero pen will wreck your potential damage on things that are heavily resistant like most rares and every boss
If you are referring to the posts above, he is using mantle & Consuming dark, so he does 100% fire to chaos conversion. So there is no need for fire pen and flammability in that sitaution.
That being said, any tooltip will appear larger by replacing fire pen with a different support so it is not apples to apples.

It wasn't for a pretty screenshot. All my damage is chaos now. As for resistant mobs there are far less with chaos resist and there are no map mods that affect chaos damage such as elemental equilibrium and %fire resist so the lack of pen isn't noticeable. Everything dies in a second.
