For your information, if you completed the relevant quest for the gem you can buy the gem at the juwelvendor in the right act.
If you completet act 5 you can buy all gems for cheap currency.
For the other difficulties only the level of the gems increase.

So you can have all gems. You have only to complete the quests.

I think they are close, maybe the rare a little bit better. But anyway, it’s not difficult, just equip both, and compare the tooltip DPS, the one having the higher is the better.

[Unless you are using the Poison gem, in which case it’s more complicated because added chaos will add a lot to Apep’s, while not beeing displayed in the tooltip]

Can anyone provide an example of a good wand that would be an upgrade to Apep's? Or what stats I should be looking for in a rare wand? Thank you!


Usefull stats:

%spell damage
%elemental damage
%fire damage
#Added fire damage to spell (be carefull, “#added fire damage” without the mention “to spell” applies to attacks only)
%Casting speed
%crit multi/crit chance (less important)

The difficulty beeing, when you see 2 rare wands on poe.trade, to say which one is the better. Actually, there is no answer to this question, it all depends on your tree/gear/support gems. For reference, I had computed that the following mods were approximately equivalent to gain +10% more damage, in 2.0:

+50% increased damage to spell/elemental/fire (sum of all)
+20% cast speed
+60 added fire damage to spells (average)
+70% crit multi

This for a level 85 char, following the standard build. It may be very different at lower level, or if you deviated significalty from the build. And also in 2.1 , with the changes to base casting speed and base fire damage, it should be adjusted a little bit. At high Flame Totem level, Cast Speed is worth much, and #added fire damage is worth less. While on low level it’s the opposite.

Also, I didn’t mention +2 to fire gems. While levelling, it’s probably the better mod. But as soon as you get a 5L in your chest, it has no longer any importance.

Finally, some examples of wands/Maces way better than Apep's:

Hey guys, been rollin with this build in SC talisman (level 74) and it's been great. Question though:

I don't understand the purpose of including Herald of Thunder in this 4-link. Increased duration brings up HOT's mana(life) usage to 35%. What's the benefit?

As a new player this is my first character in Path of Exile (Standard) and i m in love with it.
I finally managed today to complete the build with the items i was after and i m having a blast.
Pictures of DPS/Defence are with HoT & Golem and second pictures with flasks up.
