Can Rory or someone explain more about the intended balance of single target melee attacks vs. aoe melee attacks vs. melee splash?

Gods I hope this isn't a hammer/mace only skill.
Don't mind skills limited to a set of weapons, but I really hate it when it's really only one weapon.
