State of the Beta

Man, the sense of entitlement from some people is astounding.

GGG has proved time and again that the wait is worth it. It's infinitely better to be excited for 2 months for something that you know is worth being excited for rather than waiting 6 weeks for something that will be incomplete and littered with issues. They work really hard to release this as soon as possible, and I really appreciate it when it's done.

Keep up the good work guys, and thanks a bunch!

hmm.. nice ty..
Wow

massive update on the beta. I like the amount of information you're willing to share with us Carl. Thanks for the continuing hard work!
"Tomorrow's news will be about the one month race with mods from past leagues. They will rotate in and out, culminating in all of them running on the league at once."

Are we talking about beta leagues or?
1 month! Nice.
Curious as to what unique Jewels they will remove, and how hard people might start to QQ.

owever, Beta is a good thing, because releasing it before it's ready is a bad thing, so I do hope they take their time.

But, I wish they would re-consider complete wipes. I'd just create a new league every 2 weeks, and block people from creating new characters in the old leagues (but still let them do build testing in maps and etc. on a character for a little longer.) I'd then always have 2 running leagues, letting people play up to 4 weeks. As long as there are new people getting Beta every day, there will be new people leveling up, and if people choose to play hardcore, they will also be likely to be creating new characters. I mean, if Beta is really going to run another 9 weeks, as Qarl seemed to suggest, then this would be nice.
Actually quest rewards are something that is probably the worst change in beta. Lots of flask rewards, 4l items... please, these can be dropped so easy it doesn't even feel like a reward. Plus it is superbly easy to get a 4l via Vorici anyways. More gems are needed!
I'm not in the beta myself, yet, but I enjoyed the Ultima Online closed beta and several more games over the years. I look forward to testing PoE, particularly the lockstep feature, though I mostly play non-hardcore leagues so a few random deaths here and there don't bother me much.

I also want to see the progression of quest rewards, so I can offer feedback on how the game feels with only those items that you could plan for having. I've always felt the quest rewards were severely lacking (especially in merciless... you'd think quest rewards would get better... but no... they feel like filler... have to give them "something" rewards), so these alternate gem sources... gem shops? have me anticipating a better experience if I can plan my progress more directly.

The skill tree and jewel placements are another chief concern of mine. The node conversion jewels (dex to str, bow to sword) seem very useful for certain builds. Will be good to see if there are any broken jewel locations.

Golems look interesting too.

As for trading, I understand it being a challenge to make everyone happy. In THIS game, I don't trade at all, simply going self-found or nothing. I hate in-game shouting or trade channels. They rely on both parties being online at the same time and both agreeing to a price and both having time to meet up with each other, not busy doing other things. I don't waste my time standing around when I'm online, and I don't keep my characters logged in when I'm not around. Besides I've never found anything worth it enough to me to sell to anyone else for the hassle involved (plenty of stuff I'm sure I could have sold, just vendored as trash to me).

Relying on 3rd party programs will never feel safe to me.

I've seen good trading and bad trading in many games. Final Fantasy XI online, for instance, has a good hybrid system of direct trading, auction house listing, and personal shops (bazaars). My only problems with it were: to bazaar you had to keep your character logged into the game standing in town so people could interact with your bazaar (personal shop), and the auction house only let you list 7 items... and the game had a massively cumbersome crafting system that had so many worthless drops that people eventually began prioritizing high value items only being sold on the auction house and they'd vendor all the cheap stuff, making it so if you wanted to craft, you had to farm the cheap stuff yourself or hope a shop sold it cheap in towns.

For Path of Exile, I'd prefer a hybrid trading system that includes the current system to keep those players happy who are happy with it, and adding an in-game auction house system that lets you:
* list your gear with a buy-it-now price. (a stash tab-size page)
* Have a nice little search function to find gear with certain prefixes/affixes, uniques, gems sortable by spell/melee/ranged/support/minion, key words or values, etc... (This search would then direct you to the individual's listing page.)
* Have a price history for items in the same sorted category that also shows each sold item's rolls, to help set your price without bothering everybody else for a price check on the value of the item. I know there's no super easy way to compare items and prices, especially with certain builds making a certain stat in a certain slot being far more valuable than others, but it would help set a baseline.

Without something like this for trading, I don't ever see myself trading in this game. It's very discouraging, knowing I'll probably never have the items I need for certain theory-crafted builds I have sitting around.

On another note, I'm not sure if it's in the budget, and I've never seen others asking for this, but some cinematics in PoE would be really cool. I feel like there's a decent story in the game somewhere, it just doesn't tell itself very well. I've played steadily since open beta and I still have very little idea what the story's actually all about. A storyline which draws you in is an important aspect of the ARPG greats like Diablo II; PoE is already a masterpiece with respect to the game mechanics. I think a self-evident story will help to draw new players to the game; PoE has a very steep learning curve and many gamers who aren't hardcore ARPG players are dissuaded by the overwhelming information combined with the lack of a story to get you to the point where you're willing to properly learn the game. I think this would be great for the sustainability of the PoE player base and will be nice for vets and noobs alike.

Big love. Keep it up.

Nice post, Def. I'd like to +1 to this part especially, since I haven't seen this kind of suggestion yet.

ya, I agree man, theres places where new top tier mods could be cool but Qarl please dont invalidate everyones gear by adding new top tier mods for key stats like ipd, flat damage (flaring etc) life, % defense, flat defense (es, ar, ev), attack speed, local crit chance and multi, resist, movespeed, spell damage, cast speed. I feel like the game doesnt need them, at all, so if it doesnt need them and if you invalidate perm league high end gears for the sake of it, thats going to be so horrible, thats exactly the diablo model style thing you guys have always said you didnt want to do and if you do it I think a lot of us perm league players are going to take very, very badly to it. If you invalidate 2 years of what weve worked for, a lot of us arnt going to stick around for another 2 years because while you left it open without guarantees you stated you didnt want to do this and theres no need for it. Im not playing a game where higher mods are added for the sake of it making what Ive worked for second class. People who play ladders wont be effected either way, it literally doesnt matter for them if you add new top tiers or dont, it only effects perm players and only effects us badly imo. I play ladders too of course, but if you mess with my perm gears then I wont be playing anything tbh, it just sends a clear message that nothing I work for is worth working for. I dont want to sound QQ and doom n gloom but thats honest feedback, so it is what it is.

If youre talking about stats like life regen, life on hit, life/mana on kill etc that currently dont scale to a point where even the top rolls are significantly useful in endgame, thats awesome. Thats a change Id really love to see in the game.
