So... strange question.

I feel like there is no crafted staff in the game that costs less than 30ex that can compete with a well-rolled Duskdawn for this build. Am I missing something?

and by 30ex staff... I actually mean... no staff under 50ex that I've seen that when I import it into PoB I still lose 20% damage.

Not a 50ex staff. More like 5 to 8 ex. Deasl a ton more damage than the uniques.

Yes, you can push your gem levels higher for lots more Arc damage with a rare staff and ultimately get more powerful affixes.

From a defensive standpoint, Duskdawn is probably best.

Did you switch out Inspiration for Empower in your Arc setup?

I tried searching for the staves you guys are referencing, and I don't find anything that will increase my damage in PoB. So I don't know. And the ones you are linking drop my DPS by 20% compared to Duskdawn. So I really don't get it, I guess.

I did not - is that a big part of switching to a +3 staff? Or does it only need to be a +2?

Yikes. Added that staff and swapped out inspiration support for a t4 Empower.

Lots of Ex wasted. DPS dropped like a rock AND survivability way down.

Duskdawn is really that good. I don't think crafted 2-handers are better. Not.even.close.

Annul this right?

I see there some misunderstanding.

You should go for Empower instead of Inspiration when using Empower adds additional chain to Arc. And if you have enough mana regeneration to compensate much higher mana cost of an Arc.

This is good enough for story mode:

Arc chains 7 times at lvl 20 - first priority upgrade when you reach maps is to buy lvl 21, 0% quality Vaal Arc. Because using Three Dragons prevents as from shocking enemies quality on gem is irrelevant.

This is good enough for most of the maps (Though in t15 - t16 with some rippy mods you will feel lack of damage):

Arc chains 8 times at lvl 21 - . You'll be here for some time until you can afford +3 Lightning Staff AND level 4 Empower. Arc scales with levels so on this stage it's possible to run lvl 4 Empower instead of 20/20 Added lightning Damage if you got it first before your staff.

This is allow comfortably clear all of t15, and most of T16 rippy mods. And most of the bosses, though Guardians, Conquers, Uber ATziry, Shaper, Elder and Uber elder is still a problem: (excluding enemies have elemental reflect,x cannot leach and cannot regenerate for obvious reasons):

Arc chains 9 times at lvl 26 - 21 level gem with + 2/3 Staff and 3 levels from Empower allows us to reach this threshold. +3 lvls staff is slight over kill but extra lvl does not go in vain it adds some DPS too and makes it easier to reach next threshold that will be even more expensive.

This will allow to comfortably clear almost all content except really deep (1500+) Delve. Uber Elder, Sirus and Aul fights will still require heavy attention though due to mechanics of those boss fights:

Arc chains 10 times at lvl 31 so to reach this you'll need in addition to get 5 more levels (If you have +3 staff you'll only 4 levels) Cheapest option in priority to obtain:

+1 to all Lightning gems on rare Crusader amulet
+1 to all Intelligence on rare Hunter amulet (or Strength because it affects Empower though it worse for us)
You can obtain amulet with BOTH Hunter and Crusader by using awakened orb so you can get +2 effective levels to Arc from amulet slot.

+1 level to all lightning spells from Awakened Lightning Damage

+2 to Socketed Supports from Mastermind veiled craft on your weapon will add lvls to Empower which will add lvls to Arc. Obviously you should move your Arc setup in weapon to make use of it.

Just in case you want to measure your DPS in dozens shapers per second and have absurd of luck and currency
Arc chains 11 times on lvl 36 to reach this threshold you'll need:

Staff with +2 to all spells AND + 3 to all lightning spells

AND

Body armor with precise double corruption -
+2 to all socketed Duration gems and +1 to all Socketed gems

Obviously you'll be moving your Arc setup to the chest

AND

Corrupted for extra lvl Awakened Added Lightning Damage
