Path of Exile Community Designed Unique - Part 2 - Design Goal!
What should the design goal of the community designed unique be?

" It would take a fair amount of experimenting to derive the underlying values, and breaking things down for all kinds of situations would take a lot more effort. It's not as simplistic as you make it seem. If you've been part of such a process, then you will intrinsically know how complex it is. For example, take a look at Jarulf's Guide for Diablo 1 and try to guess how long that took to put together. That said, you could determine whether a finished build was better than another build, and you could experiment with a few variables, but trying out most of the possibilities on the skill tree would require a lot of regret orbs, time and effort. I'm optimistic.

" Wait, what? Have you ever used Queen of the Forest? It's an amazing chest! And considering how underwhelming armour and evasion generally feel right now, this item could be a godsend (although the basic mechanics should be tweaked instead of creating an item to solve the problem). " Sure, everyone has unique chests like the pop from every pot or like everyone trades all day. :/ |

Queen of the forest is indeed amazing. And to have something like that, well not too much like that, for armour would be amazing. Projectile is big no. There's already so much shit you can do with projectiles-chain, fork, pierce, return, multiple projectiles, etc.
For try, for see, and for know.

" My translation matrix must be malfunctioning, but I think you're lamenting the fact that it's hard to get specific unique chests? True if you play self-found, but a nice QotF can be bought quickly for under 1 Ex if you use poe.trade, so... " Personally, I don't think introducing extra tedium for players is a good idea, and that's basically all you accomplish by hiding values. They will just be datamined or tested out eventually at the expense of someone's precious time. And then finally, someone will just figure out the most powerful way to play - that's how it works for every game. If you look at PoE's design, the mechanics are very deliberately transparent, down to the literal effect descriptions (see: Melee Physical Damage vs. Physical Damage with One Handed Meelee Weapons for stuff like Spectral Throw, the Increased/More terminology, etc). This makes it possible to strategically plan any given build very precisely (of course, this includes some min-maxing). I really enjoy that design decision in a game where in the end, the focus is on your character and how you build and itemize it. It saves you from possible pitfalls and wasting your time on things that don't work together as expected. For example, with some studying I managed to get my first character to the endgame (deathless until she met her first end at the hands of one of the lightning mages at the a3m Barracks) and did not hit any walls on the way there that would've forced me into a reroll. Which is quite convenient when you're older and don't have much time to play due to work and other real life things. I think that sense of exploration and wonder you want is a better fit for games that are more story-driven/immersion-focused/creative/faster-paced/less serious/more random than for a grindy "hardcore" action rollplaying game like PoE. |
