Being one of the few games offering items on the winter/summer sales gives them a lot of publicity, it's not just a waste of money. Also, I'm using Steam and happy to get some cool looking helmets for a few cents (which you can get by selling a couple steam trading cards). Noone's forcing you to stay off Steam tbh.
