Hi guys, i recently started playing PoE and decided to play a ranger and come upon this build.

how would you improve the following build as a softcore variant of Sidra's build? Reason as to why i skipped the Frenzy charge nodes is because i currently using puncture/Split Arrow instead of Frenzy/Split

i would to be tanky, self-sustainable and able to dish out decent dps.
Thank you for your input!

I really wouldn't do much, that's a solid looking 90ish point tree. The only thing I'd probably do is take the 20% crit chance from Lethality circle off and grab 6% hp or something - that 20% node is a pretty low value one and shouldn't be grabbed until very late when all the big stuff is taken.

Questions!.
Being in a Softcore league and having invested in decent amount of hp nodes. where else can i invest points in for more dps? i was thinking Avatar of the hunt, revenge of the hunted and deadly draw.
Lastly, are the +30 X Stat worth getting?
Get Harrier next. After that, True Strike is very good as well.

+30 nodes are only worth it you need need the stat at any time for gear or gem requirements. By true end game, you really don't want to have any as you could have it all covered by gear. But it's easier said than done. If I take off my Acuity, I still need a +30 int from the tree (make sure you have trickery, though before you ever use a +30).

I am not a fan of Infractem because I prefer Chain to Pierce, and an arrow cannot Chain and Pierce. Pierce checks first, so if you tried to run Infractem while also using Chain, you'd never chain. And you'd also need to find another sustain method than mana leech. Overall just not worth it.

I really would look up upgrade your bow at this point. Master crafting made getting a decent crit bow very cheap and easy, you can get to the 250-290 dps range pretty easily while also getting crit over 8%. Just pick a Harbinger bow up off the ground and go at it with a little currency.

I also think I'd swap that Quiver with a DPS life/resist one. It works in some niche builds, but for a normal crit build I don't think what it gives you is worth it. The thing with Herald of Ice - it's explosion damage is considered spell damage - so attack builds don't scale it very well, and you end up doing all that work to freeze for weak little ice explosions. You will get much better performance from the fire herald, and would probably Grace/HoF until mana gets high enough for Grace and Hatred.

Thank you for your quick and kind answer.

Leech was one of mine biggest concern about Infractem and honestly I don't know out to solve it so I'll take your advice and stick to a rare bow.
As soon as possible I'll try to craft mine.

Atm I've changed my quiver with this
, still not perfect, a bit less fun but more effective.

I've also removed HoI, going on with Hatred OR Grace and tring to change my soket colour to use HoF, even if the problem is not the mana itsel is the leech, so I guess it will be solved upgrading bow and having a bigger dmg output.

thank you again

Hi!

I have a question regarding the bow type, atm i have a 375 pdps thicket bow, but i was considering a change to harbinger, my question is, will my dps go up or down if i change to a 330~ pdps harbinger?

this is my current bow

harbinger/decimation bows are expensive and im not a rich player, so i'd hate to change only to find my dmg decrease
It's really hard to tell because it depends of your tree and gear. You'll have to calculate the whole dps for the two configuration if you want to make the right choice. And this involves lots of calculation :s (see wiki for detail). The topic related to crit calculation in my signature does half of the work. You can do the other half by calculating inputs to the excel sheet yourself (based on your tree an gear).

Naively, I think a 330 dps harbinger needs a crit chance >= 9 to compete with your thicket.

When two witches watch two watches, which witch watches which watch?
If the witches watching watches watch the same watch while you watch which witch watches which watch, they switch watches; then, the watch switching witches watch which watch you watch.
Watching witches watch watches is not for the faint of heart...

I have the same exact tree as the one posted in this thread,
just wanted to update (in case someone else will have the same dilemma in the future), I got my hands on a 320 pdps harbinger with extra crit chance and my tooltip dps increased + I feel its working better

here is the new bow:
Nice bow ^.^

This build is working wonders for me so far, 100% self-found in middle of act 3 cruel, and I have about 300 tooltip dps with SA, Chain, Added Fire, and Increased Crit Dmg. I converted from a Tornado shot ranger after testing both, but I fell in love with puncture over frenzy. Is puncture viable to run full time as a single target skill or is it situational at best for this build? Best ranger build/guide I've seen so far, thanks!

Also curious if it would be feasible to swap Puncture instead of Frenzy and if there are any significant changes you'd made to the tree.
Puncture can be swapped for Frenzy with just some minor re-routing to remove the Frenzy charges. NO other changes really needed.
