Assuming all of those are options, crit chance is superior to IAS.

Really? Won't IAS be better since there are quite a few crit nodes in the tree?
The fact all of those crit nodes are in the tree (between gear and tree crit builds are generally around + 600% crit chance, much more if using power charges) is exactly why crit chance is the better of the 2 mods, assuming normalized quantities. Crit chance on weapon isn't an additive bonus to that - it changes the local crit value that all of the other crit chance scales off of.

So, assuming 600% chance to crit, the difference between a weapon with 7.5% and 8.5% crit chance would be 45% versus a 51% crit chance - it's substantial.

Don't get me wrong, IAS is a good mod, and will help DPS. But a good crit build needs local crit. It's the reason you see a lot of these builds with Lioneyes, a great bow, lagging behind on DPS in these crit builds. And even a lot of the builds here - my Frenzy DPS is 56K in s 5L. And my gear is pretty mediocre, yet there aren't a lot of 50k+ Frenzy's around - and it's mainly because of my bow, with a solid but certainly not earth shattering 313 dps - fortunately comes with 8.65% crit.

If you prefer math - here is how you could look at it. In the example above (and let's use a conservative crit multi of 500%) you now have a 13% (moving from 45% to 51%) chance to do 500% more damage. So 65% more damage, on average. An 15% IAS roll gives - 15% more damage.

You can see the one guy who posted a non-crit build thread. He's using dual 6-link mirrored gear and does like 1/3 to 1/2 of the damage as us critters with 5-link gear and doesn't have nearly as much survivability either.

So basically there is no point making a non crit split arrow build. Disappointing but good to know.

That makes a lot of sense, thank you.

Hey Sidra

i made a phys/crit split arrow ranger, inspired by your build and items.

It has 4k hp 50k dps. (50% Chain-DMG loss is not calculated!!)

What do you think?

I was wondering if this build would be viable to start in the new leagues, without having the items ready. Would it work?

I think its not hard to make it work. There is a bow-master for us, you dont need fancy items, just a high physical bow.

And if leveling is getting hard, you can swap with spectral throw and level even faster. ;-)

I see. Also, how would it work out with a Tabula Rasa until I'd be able to get some nice 6L gear? Or I'd lose alot of health/res and stuff?

I'm also thinking about the other build, with the Poison Arrow.

I've always loved Ranged chars with bows. This is gonna be a hard choice. :D
I always like to go for a fast tabula rasa! Sure, i miss some resists and life, but a 6 link early in a new league is nice.

I am not sure, maybe i should add vaal pact to the build, will lose some damage tho.

Would love to hear Sidra's opinon.
