To everyone having that strange slow memory leak issue - just downgrade Wine to stable version.
It worked like a charm for me.
(if you are using Arch, just 'yaourt -S wine-stable', assuming you have yaourt installed.)

Yeap i think its time just for a fresh install of Debian haha, way too much messing around this past year. nvm
If you're going about a fresh install, and care about putting on the "latest software" might I recommend going to SID as well? I run Aptosid which is basically sid with some fix/blocks in place by aptosid to try to prevent known breaking changes from being introduced. It uses the same main repos as the normal sid debian distribution, but adds a layer on top to block known broken packages.
So far I've been impressed with it, and had very few problems that were not of my own making. It allows me to keep up to date on the latest software, etc and really seems pretty stable to me.
The only recommendation I have is it's probably not a good idea to update the full distro daily (even though you could because new fixes are being released daily) but I generally check them so I know what's out there. I use Update Manager to selectively install updates. Then once I know what is there, I generally install most of them the same day, unless it is a Kernel update or an NVIDIA driver update. Those are generally the 2 updates that have the potential to break the most stuff or want me to reboot, so I wait a couple of days on those to see if they change the version. If it sits for about a week and there is no version change, then I install it.
Good luck to you and I hope you get it all working so you can play this fabulous game!
Unsure whether i want to try Aptosid, seem. Wheezy suits me for everything else I do (apart from the messy dist-upgrade which i've had to patch things up on occasion) - i'll do a fresh install on my root partition this weekend and try that out first. Might try the multiarch ideas in the mentioned link by ionface too.
Cheers.

Yes.. you need to use 1.5.6 or lower to get good results with Path of Exile.
That is actually why I asked which version you were using, as the memory error you got was similar to the one I get and was testing.
If you use PlayOnLinux or something, just set your wine version to 1.5.6 and you should be all set to play for a long time without issues.
Funny enough, my Linux / Wine installation of PoE actually plays better than my brother's Windows installation. The only difference as far as negative affects in wine are the slow loading times and the slow update/install time. His windows install downloads updates and installs PoE much more quickly, and getting into the game (loading screen, login screen, etc) is much faster than my wine install. Ingame however (once I can finally get ingame), my system runs the game a lot better than his does with less lagging/stuttering and it just plays better.
Good Luck!

You guys need to submit this game to the steam Linux project once it's complete.
I'm very excited it works at all in Linux during the beta. Kudos. I'm feeling a bit better about paying money for this game!

My friend is trying to play exile on his Mac, so he has to get the Wine version 1.5.6 and the PoE app to run the game?
