[Article] Hardcore Game Design and Subsystems

Very nice work.
https://linktr.ee/wjameschan -- everything I've ever done worth talking about, and even that is debatable.
OP was not an OP today!

Nice work, sir

Good post.

Can't agree with you on floating combat text. I don't see how it makes anything 'easier' or takes away from the game being hardcore. I just want to see how much damage I'm doing, it's that simple and an option should be provided for those of us that want to see that. No harm in an option.

But I do agree with the rest of your post.

The rest of my post was about the benefits of restrictions. The corollary of that is the harm of options.

I really think this quote is the key to your argument.

"
This principle applies not only to part of the game, but to the entire game. This is a point on which I think there is much confusion. Virtually everyone on these forums understands that the core obstacles — the monsters — are supposed to be difficult and variable enough where many different strategies may be required (the variance thing applies most to endgame maps). However, I think a lot of people erroneously believe that supporting game subsystems, such as trading items between players and passive skill customization, should be designed to be as "smooth" and "user-friendly" as, say, a normal lamp.

The core obstacles in this game are not hard 95% of the time. There are really specific mobs that are hard but most of it is completely easy. The hardcore aspects of this game are almost all in the character building phases.

bump, needs more reads
Very well written post, and yes, this is why I am playing POE
Well articulated with proper citations and references where required and even a bibliography. Salutations, my good sir.
Very nice.

Can we make it required reading? Maybe when you sign up, you have to read this post and click, yes, I understand. <-- only half joking.
