Single player offline version
Hi, i don't use to team up (in other kind of games) with other players, join 'em to my friends list and all that crap, i already have many firends IRL that they and me will be very happy to form up a squad and play together but for a goal other than just get items, money and even px; we'll play to achive a goal like a quest.
In FPS games i use to fall in squads not because i'd choosen to but because the game forces you to do it, and when i fall on that squad... i work with the rest of squad/team to reach/get whatever objective making my part for the squad, this with unknown players, most of my RL fellas don't play FPS games; i agree that form up squads should be easy or that's what i'll like... but i'll neither like to feel that i must be on a squad/team/group to progress in a computer's RPG, even when i know for good that to achive certain goals and complete X quests... you can't do it without a squad/team/group where ones compensate the leaks of others. But anyways.. i don't percibe this game as a WOW or trash like that and i trust in the good thinking of the developers. Let's C ya Punk's Not Dead = Semper Fi.

Uh! Liiiive thread, liiive!
It is AAAAALIIIVE! I've been away from home for some days and killing time in the evenings with one little (but very cool) arpg (starts with To........) and no internet connection (hotel had none - at least it was cheap). And all these days I was thinking that I would pay money for the option to be able to explore off-line a dungeon or two in PoExile until I hit home again to go online to play. Maybe the fine people at the helm of the development will allow some kind of off-line guilty pleasure for those of us who have to spend nights alone in the dark void of no connectivity.My idea is that if I'm locked in a dark room at least I should not be tied to the wall. Instead I should at least be allowed to wander in the dark for some tactile enjoyment... until I manage to escape online. |

I think they are avoiding offline options to eliminate cheating/hacking.

@FruitLord
I know that. And probably there are other reasons too. But it is possible I guess to store a character locally and allow a kind of random dungeon off-line. Or even set the character as "off-line type". When online play begins the locally stored character could be ignored and the game would resume/proceed with the on-line one that is stored on the server. Something like the off-line play in Starcraft where you can not go online with the off-line progress in the campaign. This way cheating would be impossible (unless you enjoy cheating yourself in single-player ... ). With this "strategy" I guess the difficulty is allowing the client PC to generate its own random maps for off-line use(instead of letting the server do the job). |

the fact that they are billing it as a free online rpg should indicate there wont be a sp version available
"Path of Exile is a free online-only action role-playing game" |

Actually as I have understood, there WILL be SP, it's just that it will be online as well as the MP. This being said the game will be on-line only (SP+MP). My wish was for an off-line SP (even with reduced features). Coming back on this topic in this thread was not for the sake of whining, but because of the first feature mentioned for the game "Completely free to download and play". Even so, a project like this should rely on some kind of income (unless the makers are eccentric billionaires). I am not an expert of games marketing and for sure the people at Grinding Gear Games (is GGG ok for short name ? :)) ) made some calculations to allow themselves a (functioning) long line of future updates (that we all want). I am trying to point out that a feature like this (i.e. off-line SP) is important to me. Maybe others feel the same (even better). To me, this feature would justify some financial investment even for a game that is otherwise free to download and play on-line. I would look it as a bonus that would have no impact on the on-line play, just as the (visual) bonuses that are planned as pay-ware. So its inclusion in the list of pay-ware features should not derail the guidelines GGG has taken to design and publish the game. |

there will be single player in the form that you can solo a multiplayer game. meaning you dont have to group with anyone but at no time is it a single player game

I understand where nbringer is coming from. The first year I played D2 it was offline, not because I was cheating but because I had crappy internet. D2 handled it well having online SP or MP and then offline SP. What is the big argument against offline SP for those who love the game but may lose internet? If you have to pay for it, maybe by the hour or a flat download fee, is there a big issue? I'd really like to know.
The path of exile holds him, not at all twisted gold, a frozen spirit, not the bounty of the earth.

The single player "option" will still have you encounter other players in town.
I can't see my internet being an issue in the future, but I sympathize with others about an offline single-player mode. Just as long as it doesn't delay the game or make it cost money :). |

" True. So an offline version would be drastically different. But still feasible. The path of exile holds him, not at all twisted gold, a frozen spirit, not the bounty of the earth.
