Hit lvl50 today using this build, damn it was a pain. Cruel Act is really harse on Shadow it seems, so many mobs with high lightning resist and the damage you take is just insane. Using 1H and Shield since the start of Cruel but it just doesn't seem to make any difference. Having to run lvl 42/43 areas at lvl 49 just to get the dings and going in big groups through all the areas seems to do the trick. You definitely feel like a weaker class compared to the others at this stage of the game.

That said, I'm hope the worst is over, EB soon and some nice sockets/weapons and the build will be fine, just gotta learn how to "crisp" it up and do it properly between 30 and 50.

I have faith in this build/guide and I'm gonna see it through to the end, Shadow FTW.

Similar experience.

Lack of sockets is killing me, have a nice dagger that bumps my dps and crit chance stashed because I need the double green link on the one I am using.

Yup, got bored of default and went back to HC. Currently trying to build up a caster shadow with the aim of eventually using a low-life build. Gonna try and farm up ES gear as well so I can replicate the CI dagger shadow in HC

You're not going to retry this one on HC?

oh I will eventually, but not so soon. I tend to get bored very easily when rolling new characters following the exact same gameplay style and build, and that tends to translate into deaths, which isn't a good thing on HC! Hence my wanting to roll different builds each time I roll new characters

How is it possible that I have more DPS with 1H+shield than dual wield?

how much health/armor do you guys have around act 3 cruel? i'm at 1300hp and about 600 armor and i'm struggling at the marketplace.
Hmm.. for those of you strugglign, you guys have pretty bad gear considering your state of progress, it's no wonder you're struggling. It's not an issue that can be fixed immediately though, it'll only come with experience.

Just a reference: this was my gear at level 46 in Cruel act2. I killed vaal at level 46 and had 2k HP then.

If you guys notice, my items have way more +life than yours.

You really notice that act 3 is a step up in difficulty, that's where all my problems started, thought managed to kill Piety at level 37. Did not die once fighting her, and also didn't have to use any portals, but it got close towards the end.

Resist, what % should one have in the elemental resist(fire, cold lightning), if you have about 50% across the board, is that enough? Thinking about all 3 difficulties normal, cruel and merciless, as i know you get some penalty to the resist % as you start on cruel. And i guess that chaos resist also starts to get very important at some stage?

Armor, how much damage reduction should one look towards getting? Or should one just concentrate one getting as much life as possible, the rest aren't that important?

do you mostly find your gear or craft or trade? I'm too greedy to spend stuff like chaos/ach to craft at level 48, and can't find many good items from the trade chat... and even harder to find from drops

on top of this, trying to find red-green-green-green for LS - pierce - LMP - faster attacks makes everything even harder

i do a mixture. crafting and trading. It's a bit tough to teach it as it comes mainly by instinct for me. You will eventually get the hang of it as you gain experience in the game however.

Act3 is a ramp up in difficulty because it is very elemental based and punishing for melees.
The difficulty is not something that can be nullified by just gear alone, although that helps. You need to be able to kite the opponents properly and not get swarmed and chain shield charged to death.

These are the rings i keep in my inventory:

it is not enough to say, have 50% across the board. You need to have 75% resists against the element that the mob is using. That means alot of micro-managing and swapping rings to ensure you max out that particular resist. There is no point in having 50 fire and 50 lightning resists for example when you face a lightning mob. It's better to have 75 lightning and -20 fire resists.

edit: also i did't care about armour. I just focused on getting life and just let the others be. The gameplay style for this character early on to mid game is not to tank. If you're tanking, you're doing something wrong. The whole idea is to deal damage and avoid being hit. In that sense, life is all you need.

Okay so getting as much life as possible and having enough resist towards what your fighting, correct? You really do change out your rings each time you meet a new pack of mobs that do another type of elemental damage?

Another question, what about life/mana regen? Is that something to look for? Or should the flasks be enough, just use them correctly?
I killed Vaal on Cruel when I was lvl48, had around 1600 HP (don't really care about armor or evasion all that much - and I didn't take every life node as opposed to the guide) and I had 75% to cold and fire resist, chaos sitting at -10 and lightning at 40 which gets buffed up to 75% when needed using rings or the purity aura.

Only using one support (LMP) for LS so to not mana starve myself. Only running one aura, generally that is Hatred unless I need Purity.

For gear, even tho mine is pretty bad at the moment I do use the Item Rarity gem (sits at +47% atm) to increase my chances on loot and I can assure you that it helps.

I'm not entirely struggling but it's not a breeze either. Don't really have mana issues when using one of my 2 mana flasks (one with +xx% to armor and one that dispells frozen/chilled). Not using a quicksilver flask since i can travel fast enough around the map using Whirling Blades. Just keep working and eventually things will get better ladies.

Oh, Spell Totem + Skeleton is amazingly amazing.
