Petrov's Ranger Build: Lightning Strike or Reave+Abyssus+Lightning Coil+EB+MoM+VP

I haven't died since I specced this as far as I recall. MoM is important to the build, it certainly helps with survivability. Lightning damage is going to become even less of an issue with the new purity gem tomorrow.

EDIT: I did die once to the fire trap boss on a -24% resistance, vuln map when he stacked fire traps on me and I couldnt leech. It was silly bothering to try and do him.

This still viable in the newest patch to cast on dmg taken?

Indeed, it is still viable. He speaks about it later on in the thread, so don't just read the first post.

Without doubt it's still viable. In fact, I'd go further and say it's even better now that you can get your lightning res above 77% (the previous effective cap with this build).

How much worse is a 5L Lightning Coil compared to a 6L one?

I have a good abyssus and I can get a decent 5L Lightning Coil, but I'm wondering if it's still nice without it being 6 linked.

5L is still fantastic! My 6th gem was WED - so all it did was add DPS. It adds a lot of DPS of course, but not so much that it is vital to the deal. I was happily playing with 5L for quite some time.

Yup, thats the setup I used on 5L. WED is slightly more mana inefficient given its high multiplier (although thats not the only story on mana efficiency of course). DPS wise theyre pretty similar, and it depends how much flat non-weapon damage you have running (eg hatred, wrath, jewellery, etc). You can try them both to taste. Remember IAS gives you mroe phys dmg per second, whereas WED will give you more Ele dmg per second, which has non-gem mana/life leech implications.

I'll update my OP gear shortly. I've also got Dream Fragments to eliminate freezing risk. I've also managed to 75% cap res without any purity, so I have an unreserved mana pool now of over 700, which is awesome for survivability. If I want to go DPS, I can turn on wrath and take my DPS to 25k, but have an unreserved mana pool of 225. IF I'm running ele weakness maps I can run regular Purity and have unreserved mana of about 400. If I'm doing a tough map, I can run Purity of Lightning and cap my Light Res at 80% and have an unreserved mana pool of around 400. So lots of situational flexibility too.
