The Actual Problem With Map-Only Uniques

Totally agree.

When I was mapping in SC, I was frequently the only person in the group who wasn't using a Kaom's and 6L Glare, or a Shav, or a 6L at all. That's because I tend to throw my currency earnings into crafting rather than buying gear upgrades after a certain point, not because I don't have the currency.

The group that'll be hit hardest by this change is the one that corresponds to me and my map buddies. We aren't a ladder group, though some of us have friends in ladder groups. (Ladder group is defined here by the purchase of 76+ maps in order to run as few maps in 75- as possible, since they're bad xp.)

This group is now no longer able to get the best uniques as lucky drops, because we mostly map 72-75. You know, the ones which don't absolutely require a maze, and which are reasonably cheap to acquire when the RNG is in a bad mood.

Suddenly, the bottom has fallen out of our supply of good uniques, since 76+ are a ridiculously small fraction of all maps run, whether ours or not. Effectively, the only remaining supply is from the ladder groups.

Do you know how ladder groups work? I'm sure you do.

The entire remaining supply will be traded between ladder group members FIRST, and friends of ladder group members SECOND, and everyone else LAST. Since there are people joining the first two groups continuously, it means these uniques effectively don't exist for the vast majority of the population. It means every high map unique dropped within the first couple months of a short-term league never makes it to the population at large, and only a small fraction of the ones dropped after that point do.

Goes double in hardcore leagues, since - quoting Qarl here - if you look at the statistics, if you want to die, wear a Shav. These guys will be back laddering with their buddies in a few days, check the Nemesis ladders if you don't believe me, and the next Shav that drops has already been reserved for them.

Everyone can get to merciless Piety/Dominus with a character capable of farming her/him. Everyone can farm currency at their own pace, whether in storyline zones or in maps. Some of these people, in the past, would have gotten lucky, and some would have gotten rich and then bought their shav from someone who got lucky. And some would have played the market, but you already knew that.

Not everyone can afford the time and currency investment that consistent mapping with the ladder groups requires. Not everyone wants to nor should be required to. That's fine. When that means they'll never see a BiS stat stick unique like Thunderfists, that's fine.

When it means they'll never see a build enabler, that's where it isn't fine. And the problem is not with map-only unique drops, it's with that particular build enabler, IMO. Which is a discussion for another day.

tl;dr I'm fine with it.

I think this gets all the right aspects other than the tl;dr.

Why?

And to the casual bullshit argument:

Lets say Player P can play at weekends 28 hours. And Player C can just play 4 hours. Player P has more game time so his chance to find a unique is higher and players C is lower because of time difference spend. The basic chance to get a Koams for example is the same but P was able to roll the dice just much more than C.

Player P spends a weekend (28 hours) and gets a Koam.

C has to spend around 7 weekends to reach the 28 hours where he will find a Koams too.

And thats ok. Someone who can spend more time should be able to get a significant advantage. But people that can't spend that much time are now complaining that this is unfair. P sacrifices so much to spend this time into a game that you cant or dont want. Wife/Family/Work/Hobbys and so on.

Now comes the problem. C knows he spends less time so his chance to get it is lower complains because? Well maybe he is jealous? He would like to spend that time too in a game but he cant. And this is unfair? No its not, if you want to spend that much time in a game you always can. You can change your life to a game schedule but you dont want.

And this game gives all players the same chance to reach everything. Ofc you need to have some basic skills in pc gaming but they are not that big of a deal in the end. Its practise and practise comes with time...but thats not my point.

C wants to get the same loot for less time spend and this is just bullshit. And the only reason people do not realize what a bullshit it is because they hide behind the "its a game" argument.

Ok lets do this. Soccer is a game. Your team plays 2 hours a week and want to be as good as FC Barcelone? You go to fifa and tell them they have to change their system because you want to compete with them in champions league but your team cant spend the same time with practise like they do?

And ofc you would never do such a thing because you realize you are not able to compete with Barca. And you are not supposed to compete with them. And in this game I am not supposed to compete with for example Etup. Because I dont want to spend as much time in this game. And its ok. For competetions there are races and I will play if I can short races to compete with others. Not because 1 hour or less races are fair, because I can blame RNG every time I loose ;)

Change your mindset towards a game that wants to be played a lot and is not designed around the idea that after 8 hours you are done. Just keep playing as long as you enjoy it.

PS And if you are a softcore player this whole argument makes no sense. Just die your way through maps. You have 6 chances to clear it so go for it...
Why you should try Harcore http://www.pathofexile.com/forum/view-thread/209310/page/1

If you cant do maps... its because you havent finish the game... if you havent finish the game... why QQ about endgame item?
ZiggyD is the Labyrinth of streamers, some like it, some dont, but GGG will make sure to push it down ur throat to make you like it

It doesnt change my gameplay or my fun playing the game if everybody has a koams.....

It does. Because GGG then has to balance around that if everyone has a specific item and you will get problems without a Koams.

Makes me laugh how you people think it's acceptable that the best end game items are map only AND unique items.. There should be no unique items that are better in every way than rares, it totally destroys the idea of ARPG's.
Level 87 now and highest map I've ever done is 73 once, 72 once, 71 few times, how on earth am I ever gonna see the level 78 maps and I've been playing for a year now..., these changes do make me sad indeed.
Game should have rewards for people that spend more time into the game, its that simple if... And if it would drop in any lvl people would be qquing about people being so lucky getting this there etc.. If the game does not reward people for playing more then 6+ hours a day it would make the game casual
... Casusl...
CASUAL...

me and many others do not want the game to be casual... The game is still enjoyable if played casually tho but the chance of you getting a lot of BiS is low then but is that not fine since you are just casually playing the game ? I think so..

if you want a game that is casual i would recomend that you check out some of the great games on both facebook and miniclip.com - free tip, np.
Demonic Sauce
its too hard to find mediocre items, while its almost impossible to get something perfect

imo something perfect should still be super hard to get but mediocre gear needs to be more common,

- either you increase the chance for good suffixes
- or you increase the base damage / energy shield stats on items and decrease the % rolls

I don't understand how some may think that a player doing Lunaris/Dominus runs over and over should find the same items of a player doing a really harder content.

And even casuals appreciate challenges.

Casual ≠ whiner
