Ice Shot

Hmmf, finally got my ice shot. Verdict is still up in the air, but when comparing it to a Burning Arrow, it's a bit underwhelming at the moment.

The big difference between the 2 skills is that Burning Arrow ADDS 30% fire damage, while Ice shot CONVERTS 40% of physical to ice. Fire arrow cost 8 mana (at level 11 like I have) and can cause burning, ice arrow costs 14 and will slow in a small AoE, for a very short time.

Slowing is nice, but the mana cost is pretty steep for a skill that doesn't add damage like burning arrow. I'll use it some more and post some more impressions later.

I think Ice Shot + added duration might be necessary to render a proper verdict. It's more or less a utility spell, right? If you can make the ice last pretty long on the ground and use the skill with a fast bow (like Quill Rain), you can create many trails of ice, making it difficult for enemies to get in range of you.

another convert makes things confusing when the convert update was announced. if someone used a unique glove with 35% convert to cold, is skill based convert (this skill or lightning arrow) converting the remaining physical or making a sum of converting? ask because there's three uniques that do converting, and patch notes say that skills get less priority on conversion.

I have Quill Rain and even though it's hilarious with an increased attack speed gem, the damage is tiny and it takes forever to kill a normal monster (with my lvl ~40 toon). Not to mention that when you fire 5-7 shots per second, your mana will dissapear in no time (at 14 per ice shot).
Question for Mark, does the ice patch (initial splash) cause damage (it sure looked like it did while I was using it)? And if so, where does it get the damage from?

The small cone starting from the target hit by the arrow deals the weapon damage, but with 100% physical damage converted to cold.
Looks like the skill description was not written to describe the behaviour very well, I'll fix that up sometime soon.

As for this gem, i think the skill is kinda balance as it is.

- mana is fine.
- small aoe that chills, which is not overpowering.
- damage not overpowering
- zero or no major FPS spikes.
- fast arrow.


It reminds me of the Lightning Arrow gem, except that this one chills target instead of shock.


I dont think much work is needed here.

I've tried using Pierce with Arrow, and what I observed is that when the Ice Shot pierces, the arrow continues onwards but does NOT leave a patch of ice on the ground until it stops piercing at its last target/wall/ground. I'm not sure if this is intended or a bug. I'll have to play around with this as soon as I stop having so much fun on my other two toons.

So far, I've stacked Added Cold Damage, Elemental Proliferation, and Faster Projectiles and it seems decent. LMP or GMP doesn't seem as effective and seriously weakens this already weak skill.

Like others have said, this seems more like a utility skill than outright damage-dealing. I can see this being very useful in tight packs of monsters (especially fast ones) and dealing with bosses.

Plus, Temporal Chains and Ice Shot = movement speed of a glacier ftw. Pun intended.
