Eversince its finished allocating resources, its opened to a black screen, then encountered a fatal error. It says D3DERR_OUTOFVIDEOMEMORY, but when i monitored my GPU, PoE only increased it from 27% to 30%. This continues to happen after using winetricks to set the amount of vram.

Could you try switching to a more recent wine engine, for example 2.1? If it still fails I can try uploading my wrapper, but I'm under El Capitan so it may not work for you.

I had these issues with some of the Wine engines, including the very last one (2.6). I'm currently using 2.1 which works "perfectly" for me.

This has done the trick for me:
go to Winetricks as descibed in a post above and search for:
1) "vd", set it to a resolution of your choice
2) "videomemory", choose an option that your card has (or let wineskin choose it for you as an option)
3) "win7", set the operating system to win7
Play around with 1) and 2) if it still doesnt work. I got it to run this way and had the same error you had.
ALSO, very important, refresh your wrapper! there is an option in the advanced menu to do so, and it will download some files!
Hi. Your tips helped me get it going but now I need to customise it a bit and dont know much about wine.
Is it possible to edit the settings? eg. I want to set my own resolution as the preloaded ones aren't suitable.
Same as above but for video ram. There is no setting fgr 1536mb

Same here as you. I put the video ram at 2g, it's running smooth

I've got mine opening now, but I don't see a way to log in via steam. Can I log in to my steam-based account through this client or do I need to try something separate to do this through Steam on my Mac somehow?

I'm not sure, but try this:
Set videomem in wine regedit
simply, create entry with winetricks:
"winetricks videomemorysize=1024"
then corect it to 1536
it's under:
"HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Wine\Direct3D"
Or create it yourself manually, without winetricks
