Just wanted to post and say that I was inspired to try Summoner after reading this guide. I'm level 34 now and loving it. I decided to level as summoner so it's still quite difficult and slow, but I've read that things just get better the higher level you get.

Notables so far : 14Q Zombies, 29/10 Perandus Belt

At 40 I'll be using my 5-link ES chest that I had on another character. What do you suggest I put in there? I was thinking Zombies- Multistrike - Melee Splash - Minion Life - Rarity

But didnt know if something else would be better than minion life

Thanks!

Zombies- Multistrike - Melee Splash - Minion damage - IIR/IIQ

More damage = faster clears = more items.
If a zombie dies just re summon it.

And yes, as I said before minions are weak early levels.
You should be focusing on ES and res when leaving.
Farming gear goes with the end build.
Some uniques that i have listed in the leveling section are cheap and extremely effective.
Get them.

Thanks for the reply. I missed the minion damage gem, thats helpful. I did use the leveling uniques you posted but found that I was always out of mana and really doing little damage so decided to just switch to summoner around 25. Right now this is what im using

I am still really enjoying this build and am doing ok even though my gear is complete crap compared with the previous poster. I also don't have many of the gems I want yet. Basically getting by with self-found 2-link rares for now (zombies-life on hit, skellies-minion damage, spectres-minion life, freezing pulse-lesser multiple projectiles). I'm just over-leveling the zones to make it easier. Level 30 and about ready to try normal Vaal.

I also decided to take the top path to MI first since there are other good nodes up there (perma curse, extra spectre, 16% health, mana/mana regen, etc.). It will just mean that I will need to respec a few Int nodes after eventually completing the lower path to all of the minion nodes. MI has really helped to compensate for poor gear. The only health nodes I have grabbed so far are the ones around Fitness as the extra strength is needed for leveling the red gems. So far hit points have not been an issue as I have supplemental ES as well.

Thanks for pointing me to this thread Rathik. I agree 100% about spectres. I'm at a point now where I can pretty much keep them alive, but sometimes you get ambushed by a pack of elite archers or you fight a boss and they get taken out. Having to change zones to summon them is a huge pain. So a viable build where the core is zombie/skellie is ideal IMO.

Here's my planned build.

Pretty similar to yours with a few exceptions. I'm planning on taking the shield block nodes next to body & soul. Just 6 points gives you an additional 20% resistances, 8% block, 12% spell block, and 30% more shield defenses. With a nice ES shield, that's not too shabby. Seems like a better deal than going for Mind & Matter (22% ES 8% resistance).

Another difference is I plan on taking Ghost Reaver. This will let me life leech to regen ES. But that requires doing damage. As a summoner (practically) all your damage comes from minions. Luckily there is a spell that doesn't require using passives, has practically 0 mana requirements, and should (I think) still do enough damage to be useful for leeching purposes...

Level 1 Detonate Dead. Cost is 6 mana. It does damage proportional to the HP of the mob. Also, if you can find a quality gem, each % of quality adds 3% cast speed. I happen to have a 10% which lets me splode those corpses pretty quickly. Ghost Reaver isn't exactly a cornerstone of the build, but it's my hope that it will add a nice chunk of survivability in some situations. You could do a couple of things with the gemming of DD. Culling + IIR + IIQ. If you wanted to try to get the most dmg out of it, add chance to burn and ele prolif.

Finally I wanted to ask about dps gemming for skeletons (maybe zombies?). Over in the Minion Guide / Summoner Map Guide http://www.pathofexile.com/forum/view-thread/292391 it was suggested that chaos dmg + multistrike was a great dmg combo. I think I read that chaos dmg isn't affected by the -50% elemental damage mod.

If you read the entire topic, which is 10 pages long :), you'll see that almost all of what you are saying have been discussed.

Shields nodes will work but chances are you won't be needing all that res, unless you have very bad gear, capping your res is very easy even with Andvarius ring. Also you will need STR and DEX at some point. You build is level 78, with higher levels the other nodes are more beneficial. I don't consider res nodes part of any build. What is the point of taking them if you are over capped on res?
Res should come from gear and use the skill points to get more ES. Res helps only vs Elemental, ES helps on all incoming damage.

I already commented on DD on my first post.

Chaos damage is not elemental damage, so no, it is not effected.
If you are talking about Summon skeleton + multistrike + chaos damage then you loose the AOE effect which is the core of this build.
If you are talking about the 4th gem (if you have a 5L) then you mean minion damage vs chaos damage.
Minion damage will effect Minion Instability, chaos damage won't.

hey this is a great build, I am currently level 75 and have followed this build completely, but how come my zombies are so fragile? they die sooooo fast in the spider lair map against the fire incinerator! what am I doing wrong? All my links of my items have followed exactly, I sit around 6k+ es with max res, I dont die, but my minions die really quickly. I dont have Q20 raise zombie though, does it make it that much of a difference?

You are not doing anything wrong :). I am guessing your raise zombie gem is not level 20 yet.

Check out wiki for more info.

http://pathofexile.gamepedia.com/Raise_Zombie

A level 20 raise zombie will get 32% fire res, 64% cold res and 32% light res.
That is a big survival boost.
Quality raise zombie should be your priority of your quality gems.
It will add 20% minion movement speed and 20% minion max life.

You should use Temporal Chains + Enfeeble on those type of maps.

Truth be told, fire incinerators are a pain but by all means doable.
Check out my Pier map video to see them in action and how I handle it :).
Was fun to do.

Map mods.
Area has patches of burning ground. (more damage on zombies)
Players recover life, mana and energy shield 50% slower. (somewhat irrelevant)
Monsters reflect 18% physical damage. (more damage on zombies)
Monsters can not be stunned. (irrelevant)
Monsters deal 86% extra damage as fire. (more damage on zombies)
Also monsters were self exploding so they weren't a lot corpses on ground to summon new zombies.

If you get this type of maps mods you need to adapt your game play. And this build IS VERY adaptable.
Keep clarity on, so you can always able to summon zombies.
Purity helps but not the zombies that are outside of the auras area of effect.
Temporal Chains + Enfeeble helps greatly.
Use your skeleton in closed areas, if mana is not an issue, remove spell totem (you can use fire penetration gem or melee splash, etc). Minion Instability + closed rooms = Win.

Hope this was helpful.

Some people argue that Zombies- Multistrike - Melee Splash - Faster attacks does more DPS.
I tested it, I didn't notice any difference BUT faster attacks does not boost the damage from minion instability were minion damage does increase the explosion damage.
Faster Attacks does 13% more melee damage than Minion Damage, while Minion Damage deals 33% more Instability damage than Faster Attacks; these calculations assume Multistrike and all Minion passives. I was wrong to say it's a clear-cut choice earlier, it depends on how often MI triggers for you.
