(Aug 19 NZT) Hardcore No-Party Ladder Race
" Totally agree, however, I would like to see a mix of ladders like this. Party play is a different build sometimes than solo play. AOE's and even helping each other out. I think with a good party team that play to be in a party, they could do even better than solo. Clearly we see that Maras are strong at leveling up early game. Anyways great job Capper. I think this was the best event I've seen so far, close race and fun to watch who was doing what. I had 2 live streams and playing so got a good round view of what was going on. Felt like I was watching a football game or something. |

Although a bit discouraging I liked to see that the top position switched so often.
I also like that a shadow came third, which is a bit of a surprise, since I expected Maras to rule this. Although I'm only placed 130 (well at least my char survived :P) it was a lot of fun, I guess next week is a group event so I might use that to watch some streams, not sure if I participate. |

Damn, was really looking forward to this race. Did two practice runs, had my build and skill gems sorted out. 15 minutes into the race someone knocked on my door and I had to quit playing and go do something else. Oh well, hopefully there will be a lot more solo races in the future.
" It's very true that some classes are better than others at these races, and it's a pretty big deal. To allow a group to carry the weaker classes to first place is kind of ridiculous. That's not the only problem with allowing groups. People can play solo but have friends give them quest rewards like phase run or coordinate together to skip quests in act 2 which gives them an advantage over other people playing solo. I generally don't even bother to try to be competitive in these races when groups are involved because the playing field isn't level. When I'm playing solo while someone else is playing in a group we both might as well be playing different games with different rule sets, so what's the point? I hope GGG considers doing mostly solo events in the future considering how competitive this race turned out to be and how much more people participated. It seems like only a very small handful of people actually want group races anyway. |

Just as a party elevates other classes, it also lowers Marauder. A good Marauder should be OK solo, whereas a good witch/templar won't have a chance. Perhaps a good strategy would be to play Marauder solo while the Marauders in groups are slowed down.
Really wish I would have not died stupidly nearly an hour in with my Duelist, I wasn't doing really well (something like 31st overall when I died), but I usually finish the last 2 hours stronger than most and I had some nice gear to work with. Rebooted as a Templar and got tons of yellow drops, all about 5+ levels lower than me and off class. Really should practice a few times, my pace is all kinds of broken compared to the best and I'm usually 2 levels down before I hit level 7. If I can fix that, I'll be in good shape. Well, if I stop dying. How Fusings Work: http://www.pathofexile.com/forum/view-thread/38585/page/3#p1451934 IGN: TheHammer Last edited by TehHammer#0539 on Aug 19, 2012, 12:55:31 AM

Aug 19 Race - Aug 12 Race
Both races are patch 0.9.11
(Solo V Parties) - People placing first, Solo beat parties in every single class.
So what can we see here? We can clearly see that 5/6 of the people in the solo league did better than people in the party league & the ONE CLASS that did worse just happens to be the same person who gave up in the solo league with like 40 minutes to spare because no witches were on the ladder. How can you say this is not competitive with group play when the figures dont back you up in ANY class. I got more exp than I got in a group, and if I was in last weeks race (which had party enabled) I would have been the first place ranger anyway - this is also true for every class when you compare them to last race. You can still compete and beat parties if you are solo, but that doesnt mean the same people wont do well in either solo or group play.
Spoiler
Unfortunately I need a few more events to make better comparisons, because the last 3 hour event that I placed in was 0.9.10 where I got only level 25 (In a group)

Comparing this race to last race I don't think is an accurate comparison, given that Arioc, Duolc, and Metronomy died, 3 of the typical party members taking first of their class.
If you compare to the august 5th race, you'll see ranger, duelist, and templar all at level 28. None of those classes broke level 26 this race solo, and there was a ton of competition this race. The shadow I'm pretty amazed about, I'm wondering if the player just got really lucky on some drops or discovered an amazing racing spec for shadow that nobody else is aware of. I'm not surprised at the marauder results at all. Marauders are easily the strongest racing class compared to the other classes, having the tankiness and damage of a melee class with the safety of a ranged class through ground slam. Based on these results, even though it's only 1 sample, it's pretty reasonable to claim that if all classes were as good at racing as the marauder is, there would be an extremely clear advantage for coordinated parties. Just because you don't enjoy playing solo doesn't mean everybody doesn't Metronomy. I'm sure I'm not the only one who was having a lot of fun this race playing solo, especially since it actually felt a lot more like a competition than the other races. |

I LOVE playing in a party. It has great mechanics and companionship. BUT having said that I believe solo events like this are a LOT better at testing your own abilities. Please GGG give us a /myladder and /myclass command for the races.
Perhaps we could have these races alternate weekly. This race certainly put me through the mill. I easily got the worst drops in this race compared to any other race I've run. I was literally collecting whites to sell for wisdoms and blues for transmutations. I didn't get a single Alchemy or Chance orb. And then to make matters worse the rolls I got from the transmutations (3 in total by level 19)were all sooooo FAIL. Eventually 30 or so minutes (01:30am) before the end in a moment of frustration at weaver I failed to hit the "Alt F4" bringing an end to my race. Fatigue/frustration/FUN! damn right I'll do it all over again and again. I'm BACK :)
