Achievements!?

Achievements are like, shacking hands with a retard because he just ate a apple totally alone, while being a retard.

You can do things for your own if you really want to test "things" like achievements, you don't need the "shacky shacky retard hands text" if you are really interested into it.

Ok, heres how things are: PoE has the depth to not need the contrivance of an achievement system in order to keep players challenged and interested.

It really blows my mind that nobody seems to even take notice of the limited research that does exist. I'll link it again, perhaps someone might finally take notice:

Achievements are simple to implement.

I agree that this is a very interesting presentation. It's about 45 min's long if you don't bother with audience questions at the end. I like that it's not a rant against achievements but tries to explain why they might be bad for the game. And glad to see I'm not the only one who listened to this.

Boring ones are for sure.

Personally I feel like an achievement system is very much an atmosphere breaker and makes me think of collectible cards that the player can gather without any context. Ah, one killed Pothead the Stoicbeard using a fishing rod? Let us award them the Cretin's Pride. Another one cleared the Fetid Pools in less than 30 seconds, that deserves a Hopgoblin Strikes Back.

I cannot help but cringe at the thought of being awarded an achievement with a supposedly funny pop-culture reference, unless the game is meant to be a parody and meme-fest in the first place. Path of Exile is hardly a parody.
This signals the end of a post. I apologise to everyone who had to suffer through it.
Achievements are not really useful, but i think statistics could be pretty nice.

Just some basic stuff like: number of monsters killed (normal, blue, yellow, bosses), currency items used droped/used and so on.

Not that this is really needed, but if not implemented at the beginning, the statitics will not be correct.

But as always, there are more important thinks to implement and statistics should not really be a focus.
Achievements are fine and it's a nice "fluffy" thing added to the game, and we as a Community can make some really nice suggestions if needed , on the other side this addition costs money and time for developers and it should be made after act 4 is released.

Achievements are awful in games. They interrupt and break me out of the game-play. I hated them in Diablo 3 and Starcraft 2.

Now keep in mind this is for random junk like killing 20 rhoas in 20 seconds.

I don't mind something like a total monsters killed will unlock a portrait or a total players killed will give you a specific item. Things that everyone naturally completes over giving rewards is fine to me. But random achievements happening all the time detract from the gaming experience.
I always loved achievements. The achievements that should never be in any game is shit like "kill hillock on normal". These ain't achievements, they merely act as an indicator that you have killed a boss that's not worth noting on such low level.

How are achievements awful in the game? How many times have you opened the achievents panel in those 2 games you mentioned? In no way the achievements affected your gameplay at all. They are there for the people who do enjoy them, if you don't, keep on playing. Nothing changes for you.

That are the achievements we should be talking about, not the ones "kill hillock/merveil on normal difficulty". This is a very good example of what achievements should look like.

Random? You have to understand that some achievements are gained by coincidence. In no way it affects your gameplay. If you like achievements, you try and go for them while doing your leveling/farming/maps/trading. If you don't like them, you keep doing whatever you do.

And we already play games with achievements (or goals if you prefer that). "Oh I want to get X lvl before going offline" for a starting example.
