totally agree with tpapp157
Real men leave their points unallocated and beast through the game ;)

I agree with myself. Actives and passives are both fun. Continually casting a long-term buff on myself is repetitive and boring. Weak defensive skills should be passive while stronger ones should be active. Offensive skills should generally be active.

The game includes armor and evasion ratings. These are technically passive skills. Imagine if you had to dodge/block every attack against you manually. That would be a shitty arpg.

Passives definitely can add the feeling of progress to a build when it would otherwise become a burden to add an active to progress a character, but they are a shallow addition to a game.

I hate games where you don't really have to add points or use active skills to progress... a recent example would be Drakensang. The ability to just plow through content without any significant or meaningful interaction is just not my cup of tea.

A good mixture is nice. Besides you have to remember that passives sometimes take the place of buffs. I would rather have a 4% passive than a 7% buff. Simply because it allows me to think more about using skills and thinking about strategy rather than running away to rebuff. Not saying there will not be any buffs, but you don't need as many with passive % increases.

I still like passives the most! So long as I have... I dunno.. 4 or 5 skills that are actually worth while to use, give me more passives. Give me 10 skills? I'll just pick 4 and use those. Especially in games like this where most mobs die in seconds, I don't see the need of having more skills then that. Also, the more skills are added the more they all become similar, which de- evaluates there existence all together.

Happy hunting/fishing
Building on what Wittgenstein said, even when you have 10 skills you really do only use a handful in ARPG's. While you may pick up others, they seem to be just synergy skills (i.e. hammerdin build, frost sorc build, etc. in D2). Having the QWERT and 3 (at a minimum?) mouse buttons will def help out with this compared to the D2 interface (2 mouse buttons with hotkeys, not so hot by today's standards.......)

The word I think you were going for is 'devalue'.

You make a good point though. People aren't going to be using 20 different skills on a regular basis. They'll use 4 or 5 skills that can get them through almost any situation and a handful of specialized skills to cover the rest.

I agree with this, however it would be nice if we would get a handful of skills that you don't use regularly, but rather in certain situations, but basically that's what you guys said.
I dont see the issue with passives, its essentially replacing the +4 in strength model which is alot better imo. with such a big tree it will be very meaningful and with classless skills it should mean even more

i agree with the drakensang point though
