Looting -- The official thread for discussing the loot system. Updated 18th March, 2013.

Don't worry the loot is pretty tight, I wish the leader could select the "loot drop system" when he/she sets up a party though.
I love virtual brutality so save it for the Mobs...
I thought the allocation time was good but like others have said it may benefit the wrong person based upon location and skills/spells that could allow others to get to places the intended person couldn't go.

I always liked the roll option on certain items. I thought maybe a duel/roll option on rare or epic items. Each player can choose duel or roll ... anyone that duels can mostly just knock someone out and raise the odds of the roll in his favour. Roll is always the default and last option if people don't want to duel but would make 2 or 3 player games interesting if not friendship breakers hehe. That way it adds a dueling option for rares or a roll and makes it even for all players. Only on the hardest of hard to get items though. I always liked the D2 style of item drops in general. There is no way to make it perfect and I like the idea of the allocation time because it does try to even the field between faster rigs and internet connections.

I really like the idea you made up. Fighting literally for every piece of item is what players need in an Action-RPG to keep the tension high, while also making an opportunity for everyone to get their desired armor/weapon/jewelry etc. that just dropped. Being fair to all characters, ranged and melee is also important, so that not even fragile or caster players start with a handicap.

Happy to share my hardened wisdom with you, Exile. ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)"
In my eyes the problem is that free-for-all looting really discourages party play.

I mainly don't like the idea of players having to shift their focus from combat to snatching up all the phat lewt, especially with the ranged classes, who, while the allocation time solves their problem of not getting any items at all, will probably still have to put themselves way out of position to pick up the items. It therefore prevents parties from really playing and fighting at maximum efficiency, which is not really fun IMO.

The most obvious solution to this would be just straight-up personal loot, but seeing how you want to really promote this "cut-throat feel" that's maybe not really an option for PoE.
In my opinion the so called "cut-throat" system is comparable to the idea of survival of the fittest.
What I mean by this is that the person who is most resourceful and witty will probably get the best loot by default.
So basically this system requires people to play better and think about their decisions rather than blindly collecting loot without a care in the world. Of course luck plays a major part in this, but where doesn't it?

This is why I'm all for this system, If someone has a better connection, magicfind, faster reflex etc.. it doesn't matter if I lose the item, I have only myself to blaim for that.
so many good ideas here! i like the point system where you get like 1 point every minute your in a party...when stuff drops you spend points to bid on the items. then you have a buttom where you can reset the points if all party members clk it
I would like to see how this works first hand before making a decision on how it will work. However, I worry that in the harder difficulties if the allocation system isn't adjusted correctly, it can give ranged characters an unfair advantage.

Melee deserve to have the first grabs on loot because they have to stand right up front and get beat on to do their damage. This exposes them to much more risk then the ranged characters hiding in the back. To then give those ranged characters a few seconds to reach the item after using the melee as an unwilling meat shield seems kinda bleh.

But like I said, can't really judge how it works until I get in game and see it for myself.

Will there be any party? Like in D2? Cause that will be much better, if you have players (friends) with you in your party, that the whole party should see the drop. They would give the item to the one whoo needs the item more anyway. If there are players not from the party, the will see the item after 5-10 sec.
