That sounds like a really good compromise to me. The allocation time seems a little short off hand though. The first monster you kill in a large mob may drop something nice but often you can't quite grab the item because you need to take care of the other monsters first. An allocation time more on the order of 5 seconds may be more reasonable.

This.
+1
Oh man, it's going to suck when my first rare drop gets jacked from me. I just know it'll happen.
My name is Kro and I'm an eternal casual.
FFA looting actually encourages some communication, since everyone wants to upgrade and trade - Maybe people will be nice and actually talk/trade proper in this game - I for one hope the automated bots do not get control selling SOJ's online for cash but I know this will be hard to prevent.
Im going to make a list of people who ninja my loot. Should invent an Item trap of sorts, like a player drops a trapped item and when someone goes to pick it up, Blammo! hehe.
I think the best loot system is plain as it is; "what you see is yours"!

Thats the most working loot-system imo!

They are experimenting with some pretty cool ideas
New Zealand Ftw!
I hope you have very rare items like 1-2 each realm or world =))
Poe veteran! Have been here sense November 2010.
From what I have seen on here, the community seems pretty helpful. Wouldn't it work that if we party with people we know / get to trust, we wouldn't steal each other's items?

I know that if I was partying with strangers, I wouldn't expect this to happen, but then again, if you get to know them, I'm sure things would work out. (Unless of course it is a party of like 4 rangers and an epic bow drops...that would be different)
While partying with friends is most preferable, many will be joining random groups. Human nature tends to take over in parties with no connection with the other players and that is where the free-for-all tends to happen. I would definitely like a way to control the ninjas from taking over.
The compromise seems reasonable considering the intention of game designers. I do have some concerns with a free for all loot system in general but it can always be adjusted.
