Looting -- The official thread for discussing the loot system. Updated 18th March, 2013.
I still don't get the whole thing all of these people have about letting the individual group decide on the loot system. If someone goes in solo they will be thrown in an instance with random people also in the same instance... they may or may not come across some or all of these people on their travels. Thereby some of the nearby players will not be group members, they will merely be another player soloing who happpens across you killing a mob and thereby can take advantage of this by looting your kills while you take all the heat. From what I've seen this isn't something that is likely to happen all that often anyway so I think too much is being made of it... maybe someone in the alpha or one of the devs could shed light on how likely you are to encounter others while in the instance. If a ranged and a melee are working together you would hope they would work together with loot as well for the benefit of themself as much as the other person.

" Quite right. Being bias to ranged or caster char myself, it does feel awkward to see everyone scrambling to get near the monsters when its health starts to get low just to have a chance at the loot. A timer is ok for me as long as it is long enough for people to loot when there are hordes of monsters. 1 sec timer is too small. 20 sec is better. Only applicable for above normal items/class specific items/currency items is a good compromise. |

At the pace this game goes, presently, if it takes you twenty seconds between killing the first monster and killing the last, you're either in over your head or you're dealing with a boss. Take more than a few seconds to pick up loot, and you'll be scrambling to catch up to your party as they move on to the next monsters, so having it out of the way quickly one way or another is a definite priority.
If an item drops at the edge of your screen, it takes no more than two seconds to walk over there once you notice it. Short version: twenty second allocation is overkill. Also, while I'm at it: there are no inherently class-specific items. The items you can use are determined by your stats (which, in turn, are presently determined by the passives you choose when you level). If you decide for some reason that your marauder wants to use bows and is going to invest in dexterity passives for then, you can do that. It'll be harder than going for bows as a ranger or a duelist, but it's still possible. I have wandered through insanity;

certainmly not reading 62 pages but heres my idea
have a timer for loots decent length and if someoneelse nearby wants it they can friendly duel for it fight each other to see who gets it once duel is over winner gets loot they both get theyre hp's back and u carry on. lots of problems with it i know but kinda cool lol:) Kodak moments--Priceless waiting for POE beta key--Torture |

" If you can kill monsters effectively while doing that, you probably won't be finding loot worth picking up anyway. I have wandered through insanity;

After playing some games in a party I can say that I really don't think that FFA is conducive to a fun play environment with people you don't know that well.
We'll have to wait and see if what the developers are suggesting is also fun or works out, I'll be testing it extensively once it gets in the game. If I can't get an item, even with constant monitoring or things become overwhelming, then I will certainly suggest a longer timer or something better. Happy Days Abound.

Can't you guys implement the only good system left in Diablo III a.k.a. everyone sees it's own personal loot? That way everyone will be happy and we won't need to deal with friggin ninjas or item countdowns. If it's too hard to do it, I can understand, but if it's not, I don't see any reason why not to use it.
Edit - I understand that you devs do it for the ''cutthroat feel'', but at this point I think it's more of a headache than a game feature. If you think that's too casual, I'm fine with that, but by using this system, things will be handled way easier. After all, this game is based around looting and people should feel comfortable with it. P.S. Another way to implement this system is through adding it as a option for the more casual leagues. Think about that. :) In all games I always play as a warrior, guess it's in my blood or something. For all the lonely warriors out there, unite under my banner! Yes, so far there are common, magic/rare/unique items and maybe some others, which could be still unannounced.
