in my opinion loot system should work like this:

who deals the biggest damage to the monster is able to pick the loot from the ground in 10 seconds after mob's death. After it item can be picked by anyone.

If a group of friends hunts together and they share the loot, that's not a problem, bcuz even if one person takes loot, it can later be given to other friends

How would this system work for PUG's (groups of random players) especially if 1 player is overpowered than the others. Is it fair for him to get all the loot because he does that little bit more damage?
Who then would group randomly? You cant say every group would have to be preset with friends only...
And the higher more powerful your character...the les likely people would group with you because you'll out dps and get all loot?

that's right, my bad :)
so... maybe such an option like "party" or "shared exp" is needed. And then each of the party members can pick up the loot

I personally don't mind the free-for-all looting system that was in D2. But I generally MF'ed on my own, so never really had problems with people stealing my loot.

When I played with groups, generally I played with people around my own level, and everyone is involved with fighting. I enjoyed the cut-throat loot grabbing in these types of group games...it added a level of excitement for me.

I think it's also fitting for POA's to have a cut-throat looting system, as the game is about survival...not about fairness!

Unless I'm misunderstanding something, this sytem ultimately runs into the same issue; namely, that players with low latency will have a much better chance of getting items than players with high latency.

Another problem is that people will develop programs (inevitably, as far as I'm concerned) that will instantly and automatically pickup any nearby allocated items, just like they did in Diablo II (e.g., grabit/pickit). And that was not fun.

I'm guessing that these types of programs will not be allowed.

I'm sure they won't be, but people will develop and use these types of programs anyway. That's what happened in Diablo 2.

I think it would be cool if everyone can loot any monster instantly it is killed.
So there would be some stealing and stuff like that to make the looting competitive.

I agree. Ironically, one of my favorit things to do was to out-pick the Baal bots in D2. I have more respect when playing with other characters of course... :)

I like the competitiveness of looting, and to me it's especially appropriate in a cut-throat game like this.

I was looking at TL2's looting system, and I kind of liked how they've done it; everyone gets something when a boss dies, and the item goes with your class. My only complaint is if I'm farming bosses with my destroyer/mf build, I would want the freedom to find items for all my characters, not just specific to that character.
