Looting -- The official thread for discussing the loot system. Updated 18th March, 2013.
Well Skivverus, it's obvious that Path of Exile is trying to be nearly everything that Diablo 3 is not.
Also, refuting the teleport camping issue doesn't invalidate my core argument. Bots will be used with FFA looting mechanics, cut-throat will turn into singleplayer, a ghost town, or involve players wearing complete trash to avoid losing anything of value. |

All right, let's address these other points, then.
Bots will be used with FFA looting mechanics? Perhaps. They can also be used with allocated loot mechanics to leech items off of otherwise human parties. Cutthroat turns into single-player? Read the dev diary on "why we hate being called an MMO": with everything instanced, you don't need to have a huge player base to keep it from being single-player. As for wearing complete trash, that's simply a matter of standards - if you can kill monsters with it (or avoid being killed by said monsters), it's not trash. If you can't kill monsters with it, why are you bothering to carry it around? I have wandered through insanity;
I have walked the spiral out. Heard its twisted dreamed inanity In a whisper, in a shout. In the babbling cacophony The refrains are all the same: "[permutations of humanity] are unworthy of the name!" |

" Being what diablo 3 is not? Um... what? Besides the entire core concepts of the games... maybe not. Also, you are saying what you think HC will be because you don't want to lose your items. Trust me, there will be people willing to risk everything in order to be the best. "the premier Action RPG for hardcore gamers."

Right. Hardcore is hardcore for a reason. There's nothing wrong with playing in the standard league where you won't have to worry about that stuff.

Skiverrus I think you missed my point, my opinion that cutthroat will turn into singleplayer is not because of player populations but because people won't want to work together. Why risk all your items when your ally turns on you to playing alone with no risk of betrayal and loss? Path of exile looks to be even more heavily item based than Diablo 3 (skills come from gems). Therefore losing all your items would be absolutely crippling.
And if people do risk playing with eachother, they'll play with worse gear on purpose. It makes you kind of sad when you have to store your best stuff away because it's too dangerous to lose it. Note that pvp in Diablo2 restrictions (can't use portals, must activate in town, etc.). If these restrictions aren't in place in Cutthroat or above, the smartest way to play is alone (the most dangerous monsters afterall are other players). |

If cutthroat (hardcore or not) is a league where anyone can attack you at any time and loot your stuff... that league will literally be pointless.
I honestly can't imagine GGG being that incredibly naive based on what I've seen of them so far, that they would think that such a system would work. Such systems only work in worlds that force you to encounter other players... force you to work together with other players... and then finally give you the option of turning on them, often with the penalty of social excommunication and factioning or guilds. In a POE world where zones are instanced and difficulty is probably tuned to player number, there is no incentive to play with anyone else, and doing so actually puts you at great risk. There is *no room* for this kind of thing in POE... none. They should stick to making organized/structured PvP systems interesting and completely ditch the concept of cutthroat main storyline. " I disagree. I think it could be really fun. It may not be the most popular league, but that doesn't really matter. I assume they wouldn't allow town kills (cause getting pwnd while checking your stash would be shady). But if people not in your party are allowed to join your instance to hunt you down, well then, bring it on! I am a poor freezingly cold soul
So far from where I intended to go |

It would be viable if anyone could join any instance... however why anyone would play such a thing is beyond me.
Many people will start an instance, and play for as long as nobody is near them, and quit before anyone can get close. Early players will have a ridiculous advantage over later players, and it'll probably just turn into a system of the older players griefing the younger players for the duration of the league. " This is the entire point of cutthroat. Again, if you don't like it then play in the standard league. There's nothing wrong with that. There are tons of people that do enjoy this sort of thing though. Just because you don't like something, doesn't mean it's wrong. Forum Sheriff

This would be a awesome league if a level cap was put on the pvp. say they have to be within a 15-20 level bracket of you. So you cant be level 12 and get killed by a level 90 xD.
So if you were level 30 you could get killed by level 10-50s. Cheaper than free... Speedtree
