Looting -- The official thread for discussing the loot system. Updated 18th March, 2013.

Although I'm not yet lucky enough to have played this game, my main concern about this system is that you might party up with someone who is there just to pinch your drops. While I understand this may happen naturally (which is fine) the problem as I see it is that a player may design a tanky character that can run in and out of battle to collect anything worthwhile, while in theory a glass cannon build would have to wait until all monsters are cleared and the area safe before they could loot.

While this problem may be difficult to fully address, perhaps a system could be introduced where all un-allocated drops picked up have a 10 second cooldown on them, so that if you died in the short time after picking an item up, it drops with your corpse and is available to all other players in the group. This may reduce vulturing to some extent and also add some penalty to dying. I would propose this only for un-allocated drops, as these are the ones that have the potential to be nicked. So... if a player darts in to get *their own* allocated drop, they keep the item even if they die in the process.

As I said, I have not been fortunate enough to have played the game yet, so this idea may not be necessary or even suitable - just offering an idea from how I understand this mechanic works (feel free to give me the opportunity to "educate" myself!).

Looking forward to open beta release :)
As a few people have mentioned why should FFA be the only way. Loot rules should be selectable and/or league based.

I prefer to fight the mobs not loot. But if someone enjoys that type of play so be it, we both should have our options.
As people said, causal league is fine. Or even setup between parties.

Other games:
- Press need, and roll/dice between those needed
- Only drop for themselves
- Free for all

If we keep the current way, the collision detection needs to be fixed. I got stuck a few times where another player or two stuck their way to grab the item. Luckily it was just expensive orbs, and not super rare legendary.
As many have said before me, I believe the best solution and compromise to this situation is to allow the player to choose.

When setting up a party, the party leader should be able to select an option of looting. It can be FFA, FFA with an allocated time, rolling, or each person seeing their own drops.

After some time, the experience wasn't that bad, because it gives you a reason to add "Friends".

I would still prefer a "party option". Even it is just a display of the ground rules (no functionality), that would help a lot. Since I don't want to keep repeating the rules to anyone who just joined, and it gives me a legitimate reason to kick people who are not "co-operating" in a co-op game.
Desperately trying to grab loot before your "teammates" kills any sense of cooperation you may have had.

I don't see any reason you wouldn't let players choose their loot type. If you like FFA loot that's fine, but don't force it on everyone.

Edit: I don't want to sound like I think the FFA system is objectively bad. I know some people like it and I can understand their reasons. However, I hate it, and it pisses me off that GGG is outright rejecting any other option.

Hopefully all the strong feelings for and against FFA players have expressed in this thread will be a clue to the devs that they really need to provide some choices about loot distribution. Loot could be set either for the league, or when players form a party.
this allocation shizzle wont work.
you will get allot of complaints when the better loot will drop and when some player is allocated to the item so that player gets the advantage and the other players have shit ...

make it every player haves his own loot. period.
even guild wars 2 players have there own loot.

Free-for-all loot if out of the qustion these days in MMO games.
specialy in grinding games
As i will say it again, just give us options of FFA and seperate loot so that we can focus on killing stuff rather than picking items.

People who supports FFA will choose that and others seperate loot.

It is kinda the only complain i have of this game.
+1 to all the people asking for options. If some people want FFA, they're more than welcome to it. But it is unreasonable to force everyone else to participate just because some people like it.

FFA looting with no other option just kills co-op in this game for me.
