Looting -- The official thread for discussing the loot system. Updated 18th March, 2013.

I think the time-delay for the drops would work however does the short time frame apply to whoever killed or who is nearby? Because if my ranger kills something, and a marauder is smacking things, and I get the kill, will I get the delay or will he get it for being nearby? If this was asked already I apologize but 100+ pages of quotes is a bit much to sift through.
Grimclaw - 33 1H Axe Marauder
RyuGekido - 27 Sword Dual Wielding Duelest
TemptressOfTheNight - 22 Cold Witch
Gemini - 21 Bow Ranger
HammerAndCross - 18 Elemental Templar
Make it free for all - all the time

No sense in making a game for sissys who cry all the time

This is a game for MEN
deal with it :P

This statement is not supported by the evidence.

Plenty of players team up in the beta at the moment, and I'm not even sure the mitigating system Chris put forward has been implemented.

The individual item drops do not work well in Diablo 3 at least. It feels like an aspect of the old games are gone, and if your party doesn't stay together the entire time, a lot of items go to waste. If they split up to search for next stairs etc.

This latency compensation system seems very nice to me. A good way to make everyone happy.

Loved it in Diablo when you heard a ping from a ring or an amulet, and everyone started clicking like crazy. :)

My thoughts exactly!I Love when the devs think just like me.I hate when they try to be carebearish.
THANKS GGG!
I have read first four pages of comments, and don't feel like reading hundred more, so I will ask this regardless -

am I the only one who thinks this system doesn't solve ANYTHING for the ranged characters?
Loot gets allocated to melee characters, he has the advantage, alongside already known advantage of distance because of its type of combating, and latency.

Just make it an allocated loot, with no complications and side effects which accompany those (as already discussed - breaking of the immersion and many others).

It all boils down to that free for all is a frustration packed mechanic.
I personally will be very irritated when extremely rare sword drops, and player beside me got it because I had more latency than foreseen by Devel. team or, I broke my concetration.

In fact, the concept itself is frustrating - you see something and you feel anxious about he outcome for the next five seconds.

Like you're taking an exam, then waiting for the response, and someone tells you then that you didn't pass. Those five minutes waiting for the results are a very, very long five minutes.

Very frustrating.

Sorry, IMO FFA is fine the way it is...It aint broke so no reason in fixing it. If people want loot they will find ways of getting it.

An allocation time more on the order of 5 seconds may be more reasonable.

The idea is that there's still an adrenaline rush and that the player has to be alert and aware of what items are dropping.

I feel like the adrenaline rush of cooperating with people to defeat challenging enemies is a lot more fun.
Forcing people to focus their attention on loot when they should be focused on killing enemies and trying to survive really detracts from the game.

Have you been playing the same game I have?
Everyone in beta groups up for chaos just to keep the portal open, then create separate instances to solo in.

EDIT:
I see many people have suggested the idea of different looting mechanics in different leagues. That's definitely a good way to go. Leave ffa loot in the "cutthroat" leagues where it belongs so the rest of us can actually enjoy playing in groups.

Anything less than individual loot is not welcome, having to stop doing whatever you are doing just so you don't lose the loot breaks the group play experience.
I don't want to compete with other people for loot, i want cooperate with people to kill them enemies and have a fair share of the loot.

One of the problems I see with that is people will spend more time worrying about drops than on fighting monsters. If I'm a ranged character in a deadly area, the last thing I want to do is run over to 'the front' near the action where the tanks and melee characters are duking it out, especially if there are more monsters nearby. A smart strategic way to play is to keep firing from a safe distance contributing as much DPS as possible until everything is dead. Stopping my attacks to rush in to grab an item while a battle is raging... Teammates could die, I could get switched onto. But if I want that item I have to risk my own life and everyone elses! Can you imagine in WoW (I know this isn't how it works, but bear with me for the hypothetical example), the groups priest stops healing and runs into the middle of a group of monsters because a purple dropped? Haha. LEEEROY JENKINNSSSS!

I'd rather focus on the fighting and playing the game, instead of timing mad dashes in the space of one second hoping to grab that rare or orb ect that just dropped.

So, it sounds like this will be a game where everyone solos so they can get all the loot for themselves. PoE, a single player game with multiplayer capabilities. Great.
