Now that I see more of those "runes", which are probably the maps that were hinted at, one of my earliest speculations, that I dismissed immediately and not even posted comes to my mind again.

The symbols on those stones seems to have specific meanings, almost job-like , the one that looks like a bow makes me wonder the most. What if those are somehow "maps" not for the landscapes we walk through but for the skill-landscapes.
We have a huge skilltreed, and maybe these maps will somehow offer change something about it, I just can't figure out what.
As I said "jobs", maybe some new, faster paths, maybe you will gain specific nodes or even segments.

I dismissed a thought like this, as I already mentioned, because I couldn't imagine how exactly it would be pulled off. But those symbols look too meaningful to just create a new random dungeon.
Yup, I'm guessing it will have a one-time use to open dungeon instances where you might find better drops than anywhere else. Higher quality means more rare enemies, more chests, more loot.
If not, it would certainly be a cool feature to consider.

It can't be something about the skill tree. It's already complicated enough as it is now. And I don't wan't items to interfere with my builds.

With the new hint, it looks even more like "keys" to secret areas. There would be 7 different instances of them (7 environments), just like chaos instances currently has different types of instances. Quality will probably be what GGG meant by "allowing players to choose the difficulty of their endgame". Quality would mean more blue and yellows mobs, so more difficulty for more reward.

I think it's a good system because the access to these areas are limited, so players will still play merciless (or whatever the last difficulty is).

I just wonder if they will drop in all difficulties like other currency items. Unless these secret areas work also at low level, these maps would be useless until the last difficulty. And if they work at low level, I doubt anyone would waste them for that.

edit : another guess : If it's not for secret areas, maps could be tools to transform existing areas, there would be 7 ways to modify them for more difficulty (mobs have more life, more damage, ...).
