Cartographer's Chisel speculation thread

Well I think this is a pretty obvious function, but the question is: what is a map?

Personally, I'm thinking it might be that little item in the bottom left corner of the inventory in the screenshot. My guess would be that it's either:
A) similar to D2's charms or;
B) a new equippable item, perhaps for a new equipment slot or to put on a follower? Maybe a slot that modifies drops?

Just noticed the image on twitter too. I think you might be right about what a 'map' looks like.

My speculation is that it will open up special 'challenge' maps similar to what we can use in torchlight? And possibly have a high fail rate for its on-use effect which gets better the higher the quality?
A good game isn't about the graphics or how big it is. A good game is one that you play for hours yet seems like minutes.
That's not a bad idea. Because as we know they are rennovating the end-game systems. Interesting.

Is that the Pony level, or the Path of Exile New York level? I'll take both.

Regarding maps, I'll just put my thoughts from the beta status thread in here:

- it could be a treasure map, hinting to a random place at a certain level where a treasure is buried and the chisels make the treasure better
sounds nice, but I don't really thing GGG would have made a chisel in that case, becasue the game mechanic seem too cheap

-it could generate a random dungeon and the chisel makes it harder, drops better, or rares more probable
It's an interesting idea now that the new endgame is near, but somehow I doubt that a dropable item would be used for this.

-Maybe you equip a map, then go to a waypoint and choose that map as a waypoint to teleport to. Common and rare (only in drop rates, not color coding) maps for different dungeons could exist, maybe some that have to be played in specific orders. Maybe you get new dungeons when a party equip maps in a certain pattern.
Somehow.... unlikely

After all, I don't have any idea isn't way too far fetched, but boy this is exciting :D
