Cartographer's Chisel speculation thread

I think its something related to the new end-game.
Sorry for my English, it's not my native language.
I'm all about new content. I bet they have loads of these little secrets that they're just going to be dropping on us every patch from here on out until Open Beta ends. Is that about right, Chris?
I personally suspect it will be a random drop to spice things up during leveling. something to spice things up a bit from time to time as we grind though normal to cruel to ruthless etc.

maybe you get something like a stone with the basis of a location that requires you to get and use a few chisels to clean up the image which would activate a special trapdoor or way point to a small'ish random dungeon or some such.

either that or it could point to a location where a chest or container is that may have a higher ilvl item droprate.

all this is pure speculation but one thing is for sure...

we can all now be castaway pirates and search for our booty to plunder whilst saying Arrrrrrrrr at every possible opportunity.

treasure maps = win

Arrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

I don't think the chisels are mandatory, probably just as optional as amourers scrap or the whetstone. But I could imagine them being very powerful in addition of the usefulness of maps in general, so they could be quite popular.

I don't understand why we should guess, developers have thoughts in this respect?
I think that this orb simply improves base quality a drop items, for example, after used it, all drop items in this location will fall with quality of 5%.

how many chisels would it take to allow us to never go anywhere near whimseyshire?

The PoEny level?

poney level rox :)
Mirror of Kalandra?
I assume maps will be similar to Torchlight - items that take you to bonus side dungeons - but possibly only available at the end game.
*Now with added Kiwi*

It says that it has a greater effect on lower level maps. I would guess maps are both dropped items and purchasable items.

Maps may have a built in quality which increases the monster density and rarity of items?

These maps can spawn at all levels, so it is not the new end game or at least not the entirety of it.

Perhaps the "Glyphs" of the Mud Flats were a functional prototype of what are now being called maps? As to why/how one would improve them, I'm as in the dark as anybody. =0[.]o=

you may be onto sumthing since the rune on the rock in the screen shot appears to be somewhat similar to:

Spoiler
the rune on the rock inserted into the wall by our "friend" from the warden's chamber in the rocky climb that causes the wall of spikes to appear cutting off the path to Alira's camp.
Luke: Sorry we have to leave you here, but it just ain't right to eat your wife's and daughter's brains. Plus you're really disgusting and I don't want to spend anymore time with you.
