Will quality affect ignite damage caused by blast?
Yes.
My friend is telling me MF doesnt work properly with fire trap burn, is this true?
He's relying on ancient information - IIQ/R and Damage over Time interaction was fixed long ago. It works fine.

What about spell damage?
There's four Base Damage types: Attack, Spell, Damage over Time and Secondary. These are all mutually exclusive, so for example modifiers to Spells will never apply to Damage over Time.

Fire Trap's explosion deals Spell Damage. The flame field ought to be obvious enough... :P

Fire trap is too weak at the moment, compared to other skills. Due to the crazy ele prolif overnerf, fire trap doesn't do enough damage to even kill a blue pack. It requires way too much skill point investments to even up the damage for a decent clear speed. Why the flameblast's base damage was buffed but fire trap has been left alone the way it is. There are only 3 traps so the damage should be higher for a limited amount of traps that it has. Just look at the classes/guides section, I have not seen a single fire trap build since 2.0.0 came up. Just some food for thought

could somebody explain why "life gain on kill" gives hp for the character and not for the trap?
life gained on kill only work with 1st stage of fire trap.

if the trap leech itself, so the trap must also take hp from life gain on kill. but it's not.
