Okay, just as an experiment: I told my mom about this. I explained (in broad terms) about the crafting and loot system. I explained about the insanely-great Plate Vest. I gave as an analogy "spending hundreds of thousands of dollars to bring a 1992 Honda Civic up to the performance qualities of a low-end modern sports car".

She got it immediately.

So having established that this is comprehensible, I'm gonna explain it for the benefit of the people who don't get it.

First, read the "learn to play, noob!" link in my signature. Really. Go read it. Trust me on this one. If your response to this thread wasn't a delighted laugh, you do not understand the stuff that site is writing about yet.

Here's the deal. The purpose of playing games is to have fun. It is not to get the best loot in the most efficient way possible. It's to be entertained. To do things that amuse you and hold your interest. To enjoy things.

The crafting system in this game has insane flexibility, and allows you to accomplish things that are pretty surprising if you haven't thought about them much before. For instance, you can start with an arbitrary item and turn it into a pretty good one. Or even an unreasonably good one considering its starting traits.

This is an inefficient use of resources, so it's a little incongruous, but that's sort of the point; it's funny. And putting time and effort into doing things that are funny is not stupid if it entertains you.

There was a guy I ran into in WoW, back around Wrath of the Lich King, who had a death knight who had a full set of Best-In-Slot items all with epic spellpower gems in them. Yes, epic *spellpower* gems. He did this so he could hang around in cities and people could inspect him and freak out, because the point of it is: You could never accumulate that gear if you were that stupid. Therefore, he's not that stupid. He is doing it to mess with you.

Heck, back around the same time, I spent a great deal of effort building a tanking set in which the chest piece was a Lovely Purple Dress with a +5 health enchant. I carefully tuned it so it was all non-epic or engineering gear, and reached the defense softcap, and the expected hit point requirements... and was nonetheless based on wearing a dress. I would equip that set when zoning into random groups so that if people were inclined to be jerks about play style, and too stupid to realize how hard it would be to exactly arrange to hit the defense cap while doing everything wrong, they would kick me or ragequit and then I could play with people who were actually fun.

Yes, it's pointless mechanically. So what? The entire game has no point unless you admit that "doing things because they are fun" is a point.

What's spellpower in WoW, exactly? The dress story is pretty hilarious, mind you. xD

Spell damage = spell power, its the new casual piece of shit style

Spellpower is the stat that makes magic spells do more damage; the character in question was of a class that could not have any abilities, ever, which used spellpower. So basically it was a ton of gear that couldn't possibly help him, and it was very expensive modifications added to extremely valuable and rare gear.
