(Old league) Cut-throat testers wanted

I understand perfectly well what he's trying to say and the math behind it, but it seems to me that it wouldn't work that way unless the instance was tied to the creator's level. What to stop a level 40 from creating an instance and then leaving. There's no one in the instance and so it's free game. Afterwards a lvl 10 enters that instance. Would the lvl 40 now be restricted from entering the very instance he created? That's just stupid.

The way it's worded in the intial proposition it seems that anyone would be able to enter the instance as long as they are within 10 levels of someone else in that instance. Dreamer just says "The other players invading your instance, or who's instance you are invading, could never be more than a set number of levels above or below you." At the moment instances are just created and anyone can enter. There's no relation to the creator or the players levels so if I'm lvl 1 and a lvl 50 is in the same instance it's both our instances and not just mine nor just his. That means a lvl 60 character is entitled to enter the instance even though that's 39 levels higher than the 20 level max difference.

Were you in a group Facelicker? I got my ass handed to me solo rofl
No, I was solo. I only got pwned once, I entered Mudflats and another ranger slaughtered me with Burning Arrow.

I thought about invading your instance a couple times while you were in the Ledge lol but.. I decided to push onward after 4 other people entered my instance all at once, haha. I totally ran from that impending massacre.

Alright then, that's what I was trying to clarify, lol.

lol, thank you for that :3 I was lucky enough not to face a bow user (assuming you went bow ranger) but vry afraid of homing arrows omg ~
I saw your connection drop out at least a couple dozen times at the beginning, nice 1 ranking on the ladder =)
This will bring back cool stuff such as leveling escorts, coordinated ambushes , escorts to bait out hunters and then escorts coordinating a trap to kill hunters :p

+-10 levels seems pretty wild to me. Even if you had an amazing build vs a bad build I cant see the lower player winning ever. I'd say +-2 levels and then if its a party you could increase that by 2 more?

So a lvl 15 would only face off against lvl 13-17
If theres 2 lvl 15s partied they could be attacked by a single player from lvl 13-19?

Or something similar?
Oh I so want in on this!
I just had an idea...

What about if the server is like normal servers.. but a few hours a day randomly it will go into cut-throat mode. That will allow pvp and still item farming so you wont just constantly be getting ganked 24/7.

Personally I would prefer cut-throat all the time.. but I don't know how it will ever work as a normal server. On normal open pvp games people are farming all over a huge world so they always have a chance to improve there characters to take revenge on some gankers .. pkers can just join a person's instance and know they will be there to pk easily...

Well even if everyone hates my first idea for cut-throat.. I still think that could be a cool league to have..

I don't think there needs to be a level restriction.

Someone who wants to grief lowbies will not benefit in any way from it, as there will be no experience gain and no useful equipment dropped. They will do it for 'the pleasure' of killing things with one hit?

I believe someone like that won't be making a lot of friends in the league and will likely be headhunted and I could even envision lynch mobs going after the guy.

With the current player instance limit at 12, two groups: one five members, and one six members, could all enter the same instance as the griefer, and take him out.

If not, I'm sure there will be other players willing to take up the gauntlet to keep the league competitive and hunt the offending player down...

I agree that notifications should be left in. I would even go so far as to have the portrait and health/mana bar display when the opponent gets within two screens (i.e. attacking range). It could be a slightly modified version of the existing party member portrait.

This allows players to assess the risk for either fight/flight, and also allows players to gain reputation as names become more recognized throughout the league.

If possible, make it a UI toggle option, so those that don't like to be notified of their impending doom can simply turn it off.

I think the map identification should be left on: both to help locate/track the prey, and to allow the prey to evade. But for it to be practical, we definitely need a radar map instead of the full screen overlay.

Once again, if possible, have the various display configurations for map icons to be selectable, so those that want to play with a clean map without identification can choose to do so.
"We were going to monitor the situation but it was in the wrong aspect ratio."
I rather have no map enabled in cut throat. Makes getting away to simple.

I don't really see myself playing it all that much though since it turned into a gank fest where the higher level most likely wins.

This model would have to be more skill based before I would play it for an extended amount of time.

And that's why an alert, especially a nice, loud one, is essential. If you're the hunted, you know it. Fear kicks in. Excitement. Adrenaline. The terror of being killed squares off with the manifest hope that you might just win. Do you run? Sure...but in which direction?

As someone just hinted at, if this situation turns into a hung jury, a compromise solution could be toggles in the options, to turn notification on/off (audio warning on/off, text warning on/off, map warning on/off). Default off probably. Then again who would leave it off though? Only really crazy ppl, and newbies who don't know about the option. So it's not really a solution.

I kinda like the player joined instance message and the fact that you can see players on the map. How are you supposed to track down players with no icon or see where you have to go to engage a challenger?

Follow the trail of monster corpses, among other things.

I agree with Blackguard about the idea of short cutthroat events. I cant see this sort of league working long term since new players exiting the nonPVP areas would constantly be picked on by players who had already gained several levels and items before.

The event worked for what it was but I cant see it maintaining for longer than 2-3 hour events.

I really hope this idea doesn't catch on. I want to play cutthroat at all times, not have to wait for a 3 hour event to trigger once a week, or even once a day.

The problem with this is by continually entering someone else's instance, you'll run into issues finding enough mobs to kill to gain xp. It could be entirely possible to never be able to farm anything for xp because everything is dead already.

I don't know if i'm misunderstanding, but this situation can never arise. You can always create new instances, which means there will always be xp to be gained. If you can only join other ppl's instances, how did they create their own in the first place? I don't think he meant you can't create new instances. He just meant that the list of instances you see *to invade* is only of those within 10 levels of you.

All the level limitation stuff seems too clinical to me.
