Bump. Came back after a month or two of not playing, really like the new currency Eternal Orb. Gonna make an extended project of crafting a mace, but whether I want a Terror Maul/Imperial Maul/Piledriver is influenced by the answer to this question.

Doesnt this sufficiently answer your question?
GGG stated they will change this in the future afaik, but this is as it works right now.

It does indeed, thank you. Not sure how I missed that. So aside from rustic sashes, the only thing in the game that base physical damage scales off of is unique items?

It's literally as worded.
Added physical damage isn't melee damage, so melee nodes nor str would effect it. However, increased phys damage would increase it because it is still phys damage. Bonuses on the weapons also don't effect it because those bonuses only change the weapon dps.

That is neither logically sound, nor is it consistent with the rest of PoE's very literal mechanics. Most likely why GGG has left this specific situation open to change. I suspect they are hesitant to pull the trigger simply for balance reasons.
If you doubt me, you can simply look at the way base elemental damage affixes work.

Are you talking about the part where the passives say "increased elemental damage with weapons" and the auras say "adds X damage to the attacks of you and your allies" and the items say "adds X damage (which would be used with your weapons)?" Added damage is still done with the weapon, it just comes from a different source, as does the aura, and the passive multiplies both.
Seems consistent to me unless I missed something?

I vote that all "Increased melee physical damage" passives be changed to "Increased physical damage with melee skills." (Plus adjust Lightning Strike appropriately.)
When Stephen Colbert was killed by HYDRA's Project Insight in 2014, the comedy world lost a hero. Since his life model decoy isn't up to the task, please do not mistake my performance as political discussion. I'm just doing what Steve would have wanted. Since the topic of discussion is "base physical damage," I'm referring to "base elemental damage." For example, a ring with + fire damage, as opposed to a ring with + physical damage.
