Well, the Corruption Altar is in the "present day temple" is it not? So there shouldn't be a history problem, because you can't get shaper/elder item in the past. Am I wrong? :)
I addressed both the time of construction, and the present day.

To be honest I don't like the fact the item may be destroyed. Having no proof of our failure is not enough for me.

Just doing nothing is not a punishment of a failed attempt, it would make the vaal bench be only positive expected value and that's op.
I could agree on making it bad, but wouldn't be as fun. Happy with ripping it, at least we won't see as many unchanged corrupted items for sale on poe.trade..
Add a corrupted modd ''item is unusable'' instead. That way it gives a false sense of hope since it looks normal, but we all know you are the 25% and belong on tradechat to scam nabs.

and ggg you couldve had the destoyed item, instead of being outright destroyed, animated by an animated weapon spell and had the player fight it, with its attribute requirements affecting its stats and with its damage/atkspeed affecting what one would expect
