so at peak hours last we were given numbers, there were 70k people playing. Lets say the game has died off considerably and there's only 7k people playing TOTAL now, not concurrent, total active playerbase. I'd guess that's a very low estimate, but lets be conservative. If .1% of players are compromised client-side in a day, for whatever reasons, that's still 7 people. When you're dealing with a massive playerbase, what appears to be lots of hack reports doesn't mean there are actually huge portions of them getting hacked.
Another thing to think about: If someone is hacked and their items stolen, their items are stolen for sale. So they get sold to someone, and maybe that person trades them to someone else. Maybe your stolen alchs are traded to me for a unique I own, and then I use them to make a rare that I start using, or sell for something else. Does GGG roll all that back to you? Does my equipment suddenly vanish? It's not a simple matter, and there are ripples. As has been pointed out, it'd be relatively easy to use a proxy to fake a theft. 'Steal' the items, sell them on a third party site, get paid real money for them... THEN report the account stolen and get everything back. Hell, if I were an unscrupulous sort and this system were in place, I could offer players to be cut into the profits if they'll participate in such a scheme, set up a website where they can sign up to do it. GGG would have to trace and roll back items to combat such a possibilty, which leads to the scenario I described above, lost confidence in trade. It sucks, but the policy is well founded. |

" If the problem is as small as you state then the inflation from returning the items to the player that was compromised would have no effect on the economy at all. It would create duplicates, but if it is really .1% of the population (which I think is greatly understated) then it wouldn't impact anything in the larger scale at all. Also instead of tracing the items 15 places to the person who has the item, Ban accounts based on who did the original theft and erase all items on that or connected characters. It doesn't seem that game breaking until there are security measures in place that most other online games have (one of which was put in place last night from what i understand). I'm sure plenty of elitist "IT" guys will bash me for my suggestion, but to me it seems simple. Cater to the "Common" player base until robust player base protections are in place. | |

Gorrim: The point isn't inflation, it's this chain of events.
1: Person fakes a theft of their items 2: Person sells their items from a throw-away account for real money or other out of game goods 3: Person contacts GGG support, reports their account stolen, and resumes play as normal. Banning the thief account does no good. If they restored accounts, it would be no real trouble to do this in ways that couldn't be easily discovered by GGG, and once it was profitable to do so, incidence would go through the roof and it would become a serious issue to the game economy and a huge boon to the people operating outside the normal trade system. Inflation from item restoration might not be problematic in the case of real account theft, but it would cause huge problems down the line. |

At least restore items for those who got mass jacked this time as they had not implemented security measures yet.

I tried logging in recently and was prompted to enter a code sent to my e-mail account because it was locked from a login outside an original location. After I got back on all of my currency and uniques were gone. I was just on last night.
