Death Penalties
" Wow, just wow. Where you see the whole '' I hate you and your miserable person for dying '' I see a challenge to overcome because yes, it stinks to lose xp. Keep you focused and force you to adapt the challenge. Also, maybe you could stfu about the ''respecting me and my time'' and the ''Don't give a shit about you''. I believe they do respect you and do care about you since they made you a free game you can play. If you don't like it, you can move out the way. Lastly, if your time is SO valuable, wtf are you doing playing PoE? |

Just chiming in that I do like the EXP penalty on death. It forces me to actually consider what I am up against and prepare for it.
Some people think "Death penalty sucks" instead of "Maybe I should get more Chaos Resist so the alchemists don't raep me" which makes me sad. |

One thing I don't understand about those who cry about the xp penalty comming here claiming they lost dozens of hours of progress. I mean If you die once or twice don't you think its a good idea to stop instead of throwing yourself into death repeatedly maybe rethink your strat of " kamikaze stuff till it dies". I mean death is the games way of telling you your not ready why are you ignoring this? What compels you to die over and over and over knowing the xp penaly exists. Your only loosing progress because you refuse to play by the games rules right? So what kind of crazy person knowingly does this? It just doesn't make sense.

imo make the % penalty scale so people don't lose quite as much time if they die at higher levels.

Death penalties in general are very dangerous in a game. They discourage experimentation and creativity in favour of super-safe standard play.
In PoE terms, because of the death penalty, it is much more efficient to ensure that you outgear the content your facing so you can steamroll it with as little challenge as possible rather than try to execute encounters very well to make up for mediocre gear. If I run into a boss or otherwise difficult encounter, I want to engage the boss, fight as best as I can, probably die and learn from my mistakes to ensure I do better next time. I want to repeat this until I get it right. The current situation in PoE prevents this in 2 ways: - The death penalty makes me lose a ton of levelling time, so I might as well grind elsewhere until the boss poses little to no challenge anymore. - If I open a portal, I can just hop back and carry on with the fight after dieing. The boss doesn't even reset back to full HP (seriously, in a game that's supposed to be hard and challenging and all that who came up with this idea?) The death penalty doesn't make things more challenging. It makes things more tedious. I like a challenge, I don't like tediously grinding back lost XP. Remove the death penalty and make monsters reset to full HP when the player dies or portals out. By implementing those changes, it will be impossible to resurrect-zerg the boss and you actually have to complete the fight from start to finish with proper resource-management (=flasks) without cheesing it with portals to recharge. If the devs insist on a death penalty, instead turn it into a reward for surviving. Positive encouragement works a ton better than penalties. Example: Give players a (very small) stacking buff every time they kill something. The buff increases experience gained, but is reset on death (and logging out). Lower the base XP gains across the board so that the average player still levels at roughly the same pace as with the current death penalty. Players that die often, level more slowly and cautious players (and all of the HC league) will level a bit more rapidly than before. But for the average player, very little changes except that dieing no longer takes away something that you've earned, it just slows down XP accumulation temporarily. | |
" I very much disagree. Some penalty is cool, like a 5, or even 10 minute setback. The thing is however, that the higher level you become, you can actually lose HOURS of progress from a single death. Now of course, diablo 2 did this as well, but let me note two things about that comparison: 1. Diablo 2 was A LOT easier. If you played reasonably well and payed attention, you won't die in D2. Here, especially as a ranged class, the slightest miss-step can cause you to lose hours of progress and, for most people, cause you to lose the will to play the game (for some time, or forever). 2. Once you had your main build done in D2 (around lvl 80-85) any extra points were nice, but not needed at all. They didn't have nearly as much impact as leveling still does at high level in this game. Couple that with the first point, that you die much faster in PoE, and that makes for a very frustrating experience. Yeah, some people may be into that sort of thing, but the vast majority of players won't be. ''Stand amongst the ashes of a trillion dead souls and ask the ghosts if honor matters.

" This, tbh. At level 60 when you die in merciless you lose like 5-10 minutes. At even just level 74 when you die in merciless, you lose like 30 min or more. When you get into the 80's you can lose up to several hours just from one silly mistake, miss-step or game fuck-up. " (You honestly have issues...How can you even write this up...You blame me for the name calling? Go read your first post. Go read it again. One last time. You don't see any name calling?) On topic : I have zero refute? Discuss it? Already did all that. Will try to be more clear : Death penalty force you to stay focused. There is consequence when you die so you don't just go in a zombie state. Also, it prevent the game to turn into a Uber glasscanon fiesta ( See : diablo 3). Also, the goal of a videogame is to have fun. You seem to see this as a time investment and this is where your problem is. They don't ''rollback x hours of your life'', every second you play, with or without dying is a ''total waste of your time''. If you don't have fun. Go look somewhere else, there might be a game more suited for your needs. All games can't be exaclty like you want them. This is a hardcore game for hardcore gamers. |

At first I was hating bigtime on the Death Experiance penilty but now that I have realized that it makes you a better gamer and it give's you a very meanigful reason not to Fail! Yes I do think the xp penilty is a bit harsh and mabey just needs to be nerfed/ adjusted mabey 10 % but by no means please don't take this feature out of the game! There is nothing more exciting right now in the gaming world then being a lev 76 at 98 % and running into a Gas bomb throwing Alchemist who will do everything in his power to set you back a few hours with a abilty that can kill you in 1 second if you are not on your toes!

Well I don't think splitting people up in different leagues is a smart thing to do, I just think they should nerf the XP penalty in some way. (whether that is lowering it alltogether or making it scale more appropriately with levels instead of a flat % for all levels.)
