Winterheart, Event 45: Arctic Boss Kill

i used about 8 or 9 ports on kaom to get to the point where he spawns srs, from that moment on i was lost. i used storm call and searing bond totems on my sion with 1.3k hp and there was not a single spot in the area where i could stand without taking dmg. i had > 2% life regen, enduring cry, a sapph potion and was capped on all res... idk what else to do about this... simply impossible for a scion but hey i learned my lesson.... next time spin to win i guess?

No skill boss challenge completed through shear tedium. Could not stop huge life drains and slowing things to a crawl since the damn things just spawn right under my feet, or appear right in front of me as running, or just up and filled the ENTIRE room with no gaps at times. Didn't help that alteration dump did not give my perm flasks cold/freeze immune for some time. Some of the bosses (see Malachai) were way safer than just going down a hallway in normal zones because it was rare for unavoidable cold patches to just fill the ground under/around me during said boss fights.

This was the most tedious, gear-checky, slow paced race of all time and near the end just became an exercise in TP/refresh spam. Did not enjoy it at any point.

Please refrain from unavoidable damage and unavoidable disabling mechanics in future race designs. Also, when doing (avoidable) damaging areas in future, please make them more visible. There were tilesets where only the slightest hint of mist was visible for damaging patches. Throw in attempts to look at piles of items from chests, or zones that actually had smoke or mist effects, smoke screen unique/champion monsters, etc and they were impossible to see.

agreed, the belly of beast was a huge problem. i only had flame dash but if ive had whirling blades it would probably have been a bit easier. overall i think i learned from this and can probably go faster next time even if they dont change it

I really hate Abomination Piety!! >_<

Room filled with ice storms, and couldn't move. Such a tiny room in the first place. Her beam comes around and hits me down to almost nothing. I use all my flasks and the residual damage from her beam kills me before I make it over to my portal. RIP 25 points for Malachai! Dang!! Really close after such a long day. Pawned really hard! Worst possible room outcome. Should have closed out. Boo!!!!!

yea, piety room was terrible. i had to reset belly 2 because i ported in/out a lot and she moved near a wall making it almost impossible to avoid her beam AND the ice clouds ofcourse. this was probably the hardest fight of all

so i just killed malachai on my 2nd char (1st died in docks), and mala was quite easy (at level 44...) compared to piety. probably because the room is bigger and u can avoid the clouds. i suggest you change your cloud algorithm to take notice of how large the room/corridor is and spawn the appropriate number of clouds according to that.
like i said, im fairly sure this was a lot easier for people that used whirling blades so thats a nice skill to have for next arctic race then. maybe people will do good builds for this, so perhaps the clouds dont need to be changed too much (except corridors, piety) since the builds will be handmade/powerful for just this type of race next time!
... and I'm done. Well, not done done, but done with my individual goals done.

Spoiler

I still found the rest of the race to be tedious with the cold damage overdone in a lot of areas, particularly all the tunnels and narrow passageways where there was simply no way to avoid the DOT effect. If you had reasonable gear, particularly flasks perhaps it wasn't as much of a problem. Most of my flasks were rubbish right till the end of act 4. I never saw another QS flask so was stuck with the one from Tidal Island when I would have preferred two.

Also stuck with 10% MS boots for most of the game. Trying to make do with sub-par gear I burned through all my Chromes at one stage and that screwed me too. Chests just seemed to give me Armourers Scraps and Whetstones.

There was so much I actually liked about this but so much that was grindy, frustrating and for my mind at least, poorly executed.

If this is a taste of what we can expect with Ascendancy, then it might finally be time to move on to something else.

One last thought: the only reason I persevered was for the points which were significant. If the race was worth less though I probably would have chucked it in early and not punished myself so much.

I now have enough points for the Whispering Ice and that was my main goal. At a stretch I might have been able to push to the belt but probably not due to work, real life, etc. Besides, I already have a normal one in my stash.

A shame we can't keep our loot, I would have liked to have kept going with my character.

In a good or bad way?

I really enjoyed it up until Daresso/Kaom. In belly/harvest the ice clouds became very annoying.
Belly Piety was super rippy as was the Maligaro fight. After that the Malachai fight actually seemed quite easy in comparison.

I didn't find a single Sapphire flask and Templar can't get Purity of Ice so that was kinda annoying too. Chemist's strongboxes would have been nice for this race to even out flask RNG.

That would be a great idea! I had the same problem, no flasks outside of mana and health dropped for me throughout the whole race. Nothing.

I also found the skill gem restrictions to be a hassle. Never did find my Faster Projectiles gem :(

Yeah, the same for me. If this would not have been the race with that much points I would have quit it way earlier. But so it was the only chance for a casual gamer to get some points in this ladder and come closer to a good reward. This makes it clear for which kind of players the ladder is designed for.
I was told that even if you don't kill malachai you will receive points for the bosses that you manage to kill, i didn't receive any points what so ever ?!

Yeah same here, wtf??
There is a bug with points I only got points for being 4th ranger not for all the boss kills.
