my duelist build guide, for starters, hope this helps

I'm just strting to play duelist. Should I rush as fast as possible to Blood Magic?

Dont rush to blood magic until you have at least the blood drinker passive + the life leech skill gem with at least 2% on it. And a decent amount of HP nodes. I think i picked it up in my mid 30's

Okay, i apologize for misreading the stun thing. So I'll try to explain it in as much detail as possible here.

So theres 2 things that fall within the stun mechanic of this game, stun threshold, and stun duration. You can think of stun duration as faster hit recovery, from diablo 2. Just in this case, Stun duration lowers the faster hit recovery of the enemy, or we can just call it, slower hit recovery. Once you have a certain amount of stun duration, the enemies cannot recover from your hits fast enough, and thus emulates the effect of a stun.

On the other hand, what stun threshold reduced does is it lowers the % hp that you can stun the enemy upto. For example, suppose with 0% stun threshold reduced, you can no longer stun an enemy thats under 90% hp. The more stun threshold reduced you obtain, either thru passives or gear, that number becomes lower, till it becomes so low that you can stun the enemy even lets say at 5% hp. Thus emulating a "perma-stun". Hope this made sense, if it doesnt ill explain it again a different way.

As for my evasion, im gonna do some calculations here. The most important thing to keep in mind is that flat numbers apply before %'s. Here we go.

Base evastion rating = 53 + 3 * 78 (you get 3 per level and im lvl 78 currently)
=287 evasion rating. From here, lets add up all my gear evasion rating.
287 + 348 = 635
Now lets add grace evasion rating
635 + 1244 (lvl 18 grace) = 1879
Now, lets apply all the % bonus's to evasion.
I have 271 dex, which means im getting 54.2% evasion rating bonus.
I have 40% evasion rating increase from L&S
This makes a grand total of 94.2% increase.
My new evasion rating is 1879+1770 = 3649

Now, lets count up my armor.
shield - 1505 + 301 (from shield passive) = 1806
boots - 225
chest 393

Grand total - 1806 + 225 + 393 = 2424 + 142% from passives (3442) = 5866
Iron Reflexs = 9515

Although this isnt a FULLY ACCURACTE calculation, because im not sure WHEN iron reflexs actually gets applied. In any case, my actual ingame armor is 10996. So i got pretty close to the actual value with this calculation. Even tho i didn't hit my exact number this will show you guys for the most part how it all comes together.

Grace vs Determination = Grace is better if you have iron reflexs because it uses 196 of my HP on reserve, rather then the 40% Determination would use.

Just a quick note that I disagree here - you don't need the blood drinker passive because that early in the game, 2% life leech on physical damage is actually very little. the 2.5% life regen you should get on the way down from the duelist start area and a life on hit gem in your cleave is all you need.

I'd go get Iron Reflexes first, then right after that head down and get unwavering stance, then head straight to blood magic.

This works too and it makes sense. You can do it either way IMO. Thanks for the input.
Cool. They are the 3 big passive feats I was going for as well in my DW+Sword specalist build. Nice to see that the descriptions are pretty much spot on.
So far to level 36 this build has served me perfectly. I have only died once in normal to huge lag spike on Peity ( LOL ). Has damage and still has high survival.
@twigglypuff

Whoah thanks, I realised my Iron Reflexes formula in my spreadsheet was not working properly for Leather and Steel. It was adding it twice. Now I get 10985. Not sure what the 11 difference is for.

What you missed is when you do the evasion part, you add the armor% to the evasion%.
So armor total (simplified) is: armor * (armor% + leatherandsteel%).
Evasion total is evasion * (evasion% + dex% + leatherandsteel% + armor%).

The shiled armor cant be added up directly to armor /evasion total because of shield defences, so it's added up to both evasion/armor totals as a second step:

Main gear armor calc (above) plus: shieldarmor * (armor% + leatherandsteel% + shieldefence%)

Main gear evasion calc (above) plus: sheildevasion * (evasion% + leatherandsteel% + dex% + shielddefences% + armor%)

Underlined part is added with Iron Reflexes.

So that's 10985, almost there.

Stun threshold. Maybe I misunderstood your explanation. I checked the wiki and what it says is the threshold changes the amount of life which is compared to the amount of your damage, so essentially changes the chance to stun. This is why I was wondering if you noticed a difference. I thought maybe it helps to stun with Lightning Strike, by reducing the amount of damage you need to do to stun.

haha, glad to help you out mang. I also level'ed quite easily. The only time i felt like i hit a brick wall was cruel act 3...but that was because i was underlvled/undeargeared. I wish you all the best.

Yeah man, I believe all melee skills offer some sort of base stun...so like when you hit the enemy they flinch for a second. The only thing is I dont have enough stun duration to really have any sort of impact...and I dont have threshold for the stun to continue past a certain HP %. All in all, i notice no stuns with my LS
bump for people to reference and discuss more mechanics and the such.
Hi,

This looks like a very fun build!
I'm a starting duelist (actually, i feel i am still a starting player), L28 atm, and i'm currently melee specced (DW):
My build:
http://www.pathofexile.com/passive-skill-tree/AAAAAgQABS0OrRHVFFIUdRcdGNshYDrtQKBDnEd-U99Xl1jbW69gQWBLdO108XrvhNmE75stm4OeuavFvqfB2N0N

At the moment, it already takes quite some hits to kill enemies and i'm in A3 normal still. My main damage is Double strike for single damage and sweep with life gain for AoE.

I have no idea what to expect in future acts, but if i read correctly it will be very tough.
Do you think it is necessary for me to respec and what is the best way to do this you think?
I was planning to go for both lifenodes now, i guess that is still a good idea.

Tx for any advice already!
Your build is very helpful and I already feel powerful >:D. But if I use cleave as my main attack skill, which support gem would fit it ?
