Thinking Outside the Box: What if we had dust instead of orbs?

I figure 3 digits is about the most you could fit in a 1x1 inventory square without it becoming unreadable.

Using the K symbol and 3 digits you can easily stack up to 65K. The exact number can be shown using mouse.

Massive cbf to read through all 12 pages so sorry if this was already posted.

PoE already has a shard system. Just introduce (maybe) shards for exalted/chaos orbs and you're sweet. Don't need to change everything to dust.

Like now, even with transmutes/alts/alchs, just don't have the shards drop - only the orbs; this will keep the "OMG I FOUND AN EXALTED" feeling. And 20 shards = 1 orb is fine: we don't need 100s, 1000s, millions, billions of "currency" because it just gets ridiculous at high numbers (imo).

The potential for a low level crafting system already exists, it just needs to be refined. HUGE +1 from me to amount of shards needed for crafting to be based on item type and/or ilvl or whatever else it needs to be balanced.

Talking about low lever crafting is really wrong imo. Leveling 1-70 requires from 24 to 32 hours of gaming, and you don't actually have to craft almost anything to reach that point. Yeah you can maybe throw some alchs at some white items, or some jewellers or fusings / chromes to get the 4 link you need, but that's all. Everyone who is crafting low level items probably doesn't know how to level up in zones, because I never spend anything while leveling my characters. Therefore, I don't think all this is needed. Learn how to play efficiently, how to min max stuff, and you'll be just fine until lvl 65 - 70ish.

The problem with this is that there are hardcore leagues that still have problems with desync, poor mechanics and self-found issues. Unless you are playing in a big party, have a large guild or already have the items to quick level then doing self-found fromlevel 1-70 in a hardcore league takes some time and certain build/play style to ensure you can survive the bugs the game throws your way.

Now I have not read the whole thread to see everyone else pick apart the OPs idea. I like the idea. Theres nothing stopping taking a whole exalt worth of dust for the higher ilevel items. I would LOVE LOVE LOVE to be able to exalt some low level gear without feeling like i kicked myself in the dick for wasting orbs. I dont give a fuck how exciting finding an exalt is now, I find upgrading my gear and being able to progress through the game to be hundreds of times more fun than seeing an orb hit the ground and being like well I guess i have to trade it because if I use it its wasted. It doesnt help that its not crafting but gambling D2 style to use orbs.

Just because you spend all your time at endgame doesnt mean half of the people that play this game ever get there. Youre so awesome being able to get to whatever level you want without spending anything, but guess what, you arent everyone. Not everyone is running balls to the wall fucking skip everything I need to be at endgame goddamn right this fucking second. What the fuck would opening up crafting to lower levels hurt of yours? Why should I be forced to not use a single orb until I get over level 60? What the fuck good are orbs that you cant use? Trading here is more of a chore than anything. Either have to go to some third party site or wade into the massive shithole that is trade chat where you have to fight off the single button hotkey users spamming every channel and maybe just maybe someone will see your item and want it or not want an arm and leg and all your chaos for any item, and not fun.

Why dust?
Shards already exist, we can use that as the framework.
100% Approval of the idea in general.

To the players who are talking about the "significant" feeling of orbs, I'm going to say this is most likely a case of "The players do not know what they want, they only think they do."

i tend to think of all non mirror currency as mirror dust anyway. while the idea is fresh and exciting, it takes away from poe's unique charm. the feel of dust makes me think of copper coins, silver coins, gold coins, platinum coins. that line of thinking takes away from the unique orb system that we have and tends to instead borderline on diablo style gold. though i do feel that the breaking down of certain types of currency is necessary, like eternal orbs, but that system is already going to be implemented with divination cards.
I think the best is still the old school haraudric cube, with real recopies for crafting
