[1.0.0] Dodge/evasion Lightning Arrow Frenzy Ranger with video by boxsalesman, UPDATED FOR RELEASE

BEFORE WE BEGIN : this is not a step by step guide, I will not be posting builds for every level or links for every amount of sockets you possibly have. This is just something to give you a direction, poe is not a game where one person can give you the perfect build/path. Use the information in the thread and adjust it to what you think is best and what you like the most.

This build is a good build for starters or people who like to be able to do any map. It's aimed at combining very strong aoe dps with very high life recovery through life gain on hit.

IMPORTANT 1.0.0 UPDATE :

I'm currently playing a duelist and can therefor not update this ranger build very well
so I'll shortly summarize

The build is getting major changes, as the old build used anger/wrath/grace with blood magic

new tree



Because using 60% reserved aura's with the blood magic node doesn't work very well for a life based build, we now choose to run either grace + wrath , or anger + wrath on mana ( requires reduced mana support )

For lightning arrow and frenzy we now need Blood magic support gem.

6L RRGGGB: Lightning arrow, weapon elemental damage, life gain on hit , chain , lesser multiple projectiles, blood magic

6L RRRGGB: Frenzy , faster attacks , added lightning damage, life leech, weapon elemental damage, blood magic

4L RRRB : 4L RRRB : cast when damage taken lvl 1, enduring cry lvl 5, molten shell lvl 7, summon skeletons lvl 7 ( IMPORTANT : do not level the gems past these levels or it will NOT work )
Also when you got enduring cry, be sure to grab the +1 endurance charge node in start of duelist, I didn't include it in the skill tree as you only need it once you get cast when damage taken enduring cry.

For the gear , you need either darkray vectors or blood dance boots as they both scale very well with frenzy charges, which you prefer is open to a matter of opinion, they are very important to the build. For the other pieces lioneye's glare is still the best option, while all other pieces should have high evasion/life and resists.

PROS :
- Shock stacks
- Very strong aoe and aoe tanking potential
- Able to do almost any map mod
- Can kill things off-screen

CONS :
- Less single target damage and sustain ( although it's not that bad )
- Temporal chains will nerf both your damage and your sustain
- Can have problems with -% player resists + elemental reflect ( although just one of them on a map isn't a problem , only the combination )

4L RRGB: grace , wrath , anger , reduced mana

6L RRGGGB: Lightning arrow, weapon elemental damage, life gain on hit , chain , lesser multiple projectiles, lightning penetration

6L RRRGGB: Frenzy , faster attacks , added lightning damage, life leech, weapon elemental damage, added fire damage

2L + 2S B B BR= summon skeleton+spell totem , elemental weakness , enfeeble


If you're using kaom's + thunderfist + lioneye's ( full build ) :
4L thunderfist GRRR : Added fire damage, frenzy, weapon elemental damage, life leech
Drop the 4L beartrap for frenzy, as at high levels frenzy will be enough for single target damage, even against high resist.



Optimal high-end gear

Bow : lioneye's glare

For the other items, just focus on getting high life,resists and armour or evasion, prioritizing evasion over armour isn't needed anymore since the 11.2 changes to iron reflexes. They are both equally good now.

cruel : help kraityn for 6% attack speed
merciless : help kraityn for a frenzy charge


Why take lightning penetration over faster attacks on lightning arrow?

-Lightning penetration gives a MUCH higher damage increase on overcapped light resist targets ( as penetration does work against overcap while elemental weakness curse doesn't )

-Lightning penetration is a more multiplier while faster attacks is increased , it might seem less damage but it is in fact superior to faster attacks.

-Faster attacks will get you killed easier on lightning thorns as the amount of hits counts, not the damage done with those hits ( Source http://www.pathofexile.com/forum/view-thread/110390 ), and lightning thorns is the nr 1 cause of death for this build because we hit 36 times with one lightning arrow in the optimal situation.





Why iron grip is a mistake many beginning rangers make

Iron grip seems good, but for this build it would take you 7 skill points to get there. Assuming 400 strength ( which would require some strength/all attributes from gear already ) , this would give a 80% physical increase. But a huge portion ( more than many people realize ) of the damage comes from auras/rings/thunderfist ... which is all elemental damage, this is why we take the projectile damage in the tree as this does also affect elemental damage. It may seem less, but it does much more for fewer skill points.

Also if you really want to get more physical damage ( after getting a lioneye's ), at the start of the ranger tree you can pick up 62% physical damage 4% attack speed +10 life and +4% movement for 5 points. This beats iron grip's 7 points for 80%.

Also Lionel not the best bow for that build. Better to have 3-ele bow with high aps and take RT.
Since you don't have crit nodes then Lionel will have 5% crit chance with 150% crit multiplier. That means that it will do 95 hits and 5 crits or 95 + 5 * 1.5 = 102.5
Same bow with RT will do 100 damage. Difference is so small, that don't compared with possible dps of a 3-ele fast ticket.
Damage on LA will be higher with 3-ele ticket because of elemental nodes and WeD support gem. You don;t have nor Hatred, nor Added fire damage, that boosts from phys damage from bow.

This is the case where Lionel not the optimal bow.

Example:
Ticket with
+30 - 60 fire damage
+10 - 100 lighting damage
+30% Weapon Elemental Dmg
+ 15% Local Attack Speed

Beat that with Lionel :)

elem reflect maps are forbidden? I do an ele reflect pack in my demonstration vid and the life gain on hit outsustains it, no drop in health at all.

Also chain LA hits 12 targets, not 9
Since we use lmp it hits 36 even. Though I still don't die unless I mindlessly shoot for over 2 seconds on lightning thorns, I never claimed the build could do any map mod without thinking

You need to hit with all 3 main arrows to make 36 hits.

Lightning arrow, weapon elemental damage, life gain on hit , chain , lesser multiple projectiles, lightning penetration
15 * 1.7 * 1.5 * 2 * 1.5 * 1.5 = 172 life per shot.
Lets presume 2 of 3 arrows hit the target and we have at least 4 mobs to provide us with full chain.
We have 24 hits: 44 * 0.7 * 24 = WoW! 740 life back. Or 570 life pure income per shot.

Yep, it seems that you don't care about nor elem reflect mobs niether elem reflect map with such life income.
Yep, I was wrong with my judgement. Done it before the math because I could never imagine that there is a way for pure elem build to ignore elem reflect mobs.

As for Lighting Thorns - it is a big problem for such build. You can check it at threads where high lvl players on such builds died in a sek at HC. So, I think it should be in Cons. The thing that don't happen on every map, but it could kill you is a sec.


What about my idea about the 3-ele bow?

Even double elemental reflect will do nothing (except maybe shockstacked / -max resist).
Lightning Thorns are pretty deadly though.

Other than that, this exact same build exists in this form like a dozen times and will be overthrown monday/tuesday.
Hey, I'm currently playing a Marauder Lightning Arrow character, with pretty much the exact same passives except for the 4 evasion nodes that rangers start with and the other 5 nodes that the ranger starts.

Now for my question. I use Elemental Hit instead of Frenzy. Which one do you think is better, Frenzy or Elemental hit? Should I change out my Elemental Hit for Frenzy?

Elemental hit is better at lower gear levels , frenzy becomes better at high gear levels with a high physical damage bow, also keeping up the frenzy charges will increase your lightning arrow dps and survivability through life gain on hit.
