This does sound like a really cool idea.

When I think of the shrine that would be put into the game I imagine the "magic tech" that this game has. And by "magic tech" I mean magical stuff that follows technology principles or looks like it is some kind of ancient tech. Example being the device at the end of the baleful gem quest. As for the creature, maybe some sort of Frankenstein's monster thing going on.

I agree with some others, this would be an excellent way to add an item sink into the game, as well as adding an extra little bit of randomness to the world. :D

What I love about your suggestion is that campy old school RPG feel it has to it. Very nice.

I've been putting some thought into how best to incorporate skill gems into the suggestion, I think I've got a pretty good idea on how to do it.

I'll update the first post with it tomorrow, I'm tired now though and would probably just mess it up. :p

Skill gems could add a guaranteed ability to the boss

+%Quality could directly relate to +% quantity in the reward...

10% Quality Frost nova gem = Boss uses frost nova and reward chest gets +10% quantity on items dropped

or something to that effect? :)

If you put a mirror on the alter, the boss should be your Doppelgänger...

And now, if you put two mirrors on the altar,
it awakens the altar itself and he got like super lightning laser powers.
But only when the sun is shining!
