Diablo 1 - Best Loot and Itemization to Date - Modder explains.

I agree with OP, I had the most fun in Crucible because i could spend days working on my items in a variety of ways, this was actually the most fun i had with poe ever. would be nice to see this again in some form

Yea, ARPGs are about killing monsters but they're also exploring and being immersed in the map. Even tactically. I'm sure most people have used doors, gates and corners in Diablo 1.

Yeah. Big reason for why people think the ideal map layout in PoE is a rectangular field filled with monsters is because anything more complex than this just doesn't offer much. Random maps are wasted in modern ARPGs. Every room is just a space with monsters in it.

If GGG wasn't so committed to MMO-lite boss mechanics they could probably get away with having a big nasty and minions walk up on you. Not every boss needs an arena with set mechanics.

To me, this would be a perfect fit for the special rares in maps; the Gloomwood Witch, the Treeish creature in the Hunting Grounds, etc. They aren't bosses, but they should be more than just a rare.

Also, excellent OP. I forgot how interesting D1 was, and never really got into the "end game" mind set until D2.
Man, I never got that deep into D1 and now I'm kinda sad about it. I did play D2 for about 12 years including the recent relaunch. Even from there GGG is missing some stuff that I think could make POE2 more interesting at least.

Great post, I appreciated the look into what I missed in D1.
