You're insane if you think GGG doesn't care about investor money. It's probably not as simple as the person you're quoting makes it out to be, but GGG definitely cares about its investors.

their investor is tencent and they openly say tencent doesnt tell them anything about making the game, ggg just make the game they want to make and tencent trusts them to make it.

they believe if they make the best game by their own standards that hopefully like minded gamers will play it, thats what they try and do and it works. like minded gamers do play it, thats why the game is successful, thats why tencent bought the shares and thats why they leave ggg alone to keep doing what they do.

you think they sit around thinking oh lets design poe with this movespeed because then people will take longer to walk from A to B and that means we can say people were logged in longer? you think tencent cares about that sort of stuff? its totally irrelevant.

people sit down and play for 4 hours because they have 4 hours to play, they dont play longer or shorter times because of the movespeed.

they buy mtx because they enjoy the game. thats what tencent cares about.

Well, yeah. And how do you get people to buy that MTX? You make them sit in the game longer, which leads them to invest more time in the game, which makes them more likely to impulse purchase MTX because PoE is now their identity. This playbook has been used by game designers for over a decade now.

I'm sure the GGG devs love their games. My impression talking to them about a decade ago was that they were super passionate about making PoE be the best it could be. But GGG has also grown as a company, and Tencent likely expects bigger returns. That means GGG must balance their love for their game with pleasing Tencent.

hahahaha lololol good one.
don't forget to set the player defences to 0 and give the mob 95% chance to hit when you run. you know, cuz d2 did it better

sure. but they dot hat by making the game more fun to play right? not by making peoples movespeed slower.

people dont sit down and say ok im gonna walk from this point to that point and then log off, and if ti takes twice as long because i move half the speed then ill sit here for twice as long doing it. no one thinks like that, its not a thing.

poe1 is stupidly fast, it kept getting faster and the player base went up, the profits went up. i dont think those 2 things were tied i just think it became a more fun game over all.

im not even sure that keeping people playing longer in a session is that much of a thing. the model is about making the game really fun so people come back next league, giving them reasons to come back, having big build diversity things to do. they make most of their money on league launch and the first few weeks. so its about people playing longer via coming back for the next league, playing for longer over years and years. not i need to play an extra minute because it took me longer to get to my stash after my last map due to movespeed.

tencent own poe, league of legends, tons of huge successful games and theyre widely known for not messing with the development of those games. they leave the studios alone to make the games. the reason they bought those games is because they were successful and the reason they are successful is because the devs know what theyre doing.

theyre not idiots.

You are correct in that GGG makes most of their money from casual players returning every league start and impulse purchasing supporter packs, yes. I agree with you that the devs probably didn't implement slow movespeeds to keep players in the game longer, but it is ONE way that game devs in general DO keep players in games for longer periods of time. Maybe it was intentional. We really don't know.

Personally, I think PoE1 became less fun and more addicting as it devolved into a cookie clicker. But a lot of people seem to enjoy that.
if play time maximization wouldn't be on the list then poe1 wouldn't get mobile game real time bonuses that require player log in every x hours.

on the flip side people look at tencent with their western risk aversion corp glasses. their investment model is much more tolerant to innovation and so keeping GGG at a longer leash is fine by them because they know if they hit, they gonna drive it out of the park just by looking at their track record.

nothing is black and white, but tencent saved this game from becoming a wallstreet investment slop
Something important to keep in mind is that Tencent almost certainly does not tell GGG exactly what to do with their game. Depending on the kinds of shares they own in the company, they usually aren't able to do so.
It’s ironic that the original creator of D2 would have removed that feature—go figure.

As for PoE2, while there are certainly improvements that need to be made, the minds behind its development are among the smartest in the industry. They might not match up with the resources and scale of elite AAA studios, but their brilliance and adaptability are second to none.
